Sounds a lot like me, I was really young when this came out and my family never went to the movie theater even though I REEEALLY wanted to see it. Eventually I saw it on Disney Channel once or twice, and I friggin' loved it. Of course, years and years went by and I never got to see it again until it was on Netflix, and I still love it.
I agree, this movie really did not get the credit it deserved. Disney did a new art style, a new direction with science fiction and no love story or music numbers, etc etc etc. The thing is, everyone I know who's seen it loves it too, and from what I read most critics gave it a good review so I don't understand why Disney dropped it. Hell, they canceled a submarine ride and the Team Atlantis show and went with an absolutely sh!tty sequel.
Part of it I think is the time. Disney had made all the big ones like The Lion King, Pocahantas, etc and by the time A:TLE came out Disney was churning out the sh!tt!er movies like Home On The Range. I think by then people figured that Disney was done with the classics and got tired of the other underwhelming movies so they just chocked up A:TLE with them. It's a shame considering how unique this movie is compared to all the other Disney movies.
Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.
