What was with the final episode?
As I recall, all the characters on the show were violently killed off. Was this the writers venting their frustration at being cancelled with the network, or with viewers, or what?

Yup... 'twas just your usual season-ending cliffhanger. There was hope that there'd be a second season, but it just didn't happen. Since the networks (particularly NBC) don't like to announce their new schedule until the last minute (long after filming has wrapped on the season's last episode, usually), there wouldn't have been occasion to write an actual series finale for a show that hopes to continue.
But I always did wonder how they would have written their way out of that episode's corner: one character strangled, one in a car wreck, two blown up... oh, and one dumped by his would-be girlfriend.
Poor Albert never did get any respect...

Christ I hated the ending to this show. NBC shouldn't have cancelled it. Personally I think that the producers and writers should have made a final-final episode anyway, before cancellation, so that we could've seen how it REALLY was supposed to end.

I agree, it was a REALLY good show. I just remember watching The Pretender, Profiler, and The Others every...Saturday night?? whatever night. The way I remember it ending....there was a previous episode where "The Devil"..I'm pretty sure it was him..anyway, he was kind of a shape shifter and he managed to ask them all what they "wanted." So in the final episode he returns and I believe as each of them get what they want, something terrible happens in the process...kinda like a "be careful what you wish for" kinda deal. And it ends, like everyone said, with a cliffhanger, and a really good one too. I was so mad when it got cancelled, along with the other two shows.
