Great show UNTIL --
---- it went totally disco in the late 70s. Out of sheer disgust, I quit watching.
I'm still mad about it. I'd been a faithful "Midnight Special" fan from its inception until then (I was born in 1959). No matter how bad your junior-high or high-school week was going, no matter whether you were struggling with algebra or bullies, you could always look forward to Friday night and "TMS." Until its decline into disco, one could always count on fine musicians giving fine performances.
Among many memories, I especially recall Jim Croce's performance less than a month before his untimely death; David Bowie's first live performance on American TV (though I'm not much of a Bowie fan); many by the great Seals and Crofts; others by Elton John, Gordon Lightfoot, Randy Newman, Journey, America, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Ray Charles, Heart, Janis Ian, Billy Joel, B.B King, Doobie Brothers, The Spinners, Al Green, Fleetwood Mac -- so many more:)
