I cant belive you guys hate this so much!

I watched the first 2 and loved the series so much i just bougth the rest! I thought the 3rd one was cheap and nasty the 4..UGH worst story i've ever seen!

The 5th however... WOW it was AMAZING! It didnt overuse gore and blood like most of the others, it used good actors rather than just out of college hacks and most of all had a well scripted though out story.

I do see how it wasnt like the rest of the hellraiser series so im guessing thats why people wouldnt like it. Compared to all other straight to video sequals i personaly love it :D It reminds me of Silent hill 2 tbh. Own personal hell etc. Its such a shame Doug Bradley doesnt like it. :(

I agree. I think that after the original Hellraiser, Inferno is the best installment of the series and often show people the original Hellraiser followed by Inferno as if it were the sequel and all of them leave with a really positive impression as a whole. Personally, I think that if it was the actual sequel to the original Bradley would've liked it a bit more. I think he was just worn on all the bad sequels and uneven writing and took it out on Inferno because it was so different and he had reduced screentime. It's odd too because on the documentary on the DVD for the film he seems pretty okay with it.

My copy didnt have the doc on it :'(
I guess your right, i would be pissed too if i had to be in some of them sequals (the last one with the internet...jesus.. ) Lol ive doe something along them lines.

I got my friend to watch hellraiser one and two (which she hated) then forced her to watch the 5th and she loved it! I guess the fans dont like it because if you took pin head out and the box and replaced it with a demon and an artifac or something, it would come out the same. (if you know what i mean)

However, I do love when actors admit how bad a film was. Namely ewen megreggor (bad spelling) when asked if he thought the star wars trilogy was good on a UK tv show if he ('This Morning' i think..) just kind of smiled and said "Mhm" and laughed and they moved on.

From now on, whenever you want to introduce anyone to Hellraiser just show them the original Hellraiser and Inferno. That's what I do and everyone leaves with a really great impression of the series. If they feel like they really want to watch someof the others instruct them to see Hellseeker or Deader in that order. Any of the others they watch at their own risk. But I will say that the most unfortunate thing about the series is that Leviathan is only in Hellbound. I wish he'd have another appearance in the series.

reply

Indeed! I'm glad Leviathan got plenty of time 'on screen' in the comics, but would love more of the Labyrinth's Lord in the films.

Scarecrow, I never got into the Hellraiser comics and only was into the Nightbreed comics. In the Hellraiser/Nightbreed Crossover I did get a few panels of Leviathan, but I was wondering how he was depicted in the comics and if he ever uttered any sage words or did anything noteworthy that would shed light either on his origins or the true power he has.

I honestly enjoyed the second one IMMENSELY, but it has to be the unrated and not the R version.

That being said, Inferno is watching just for the creepy old man in the wheelchair.

i agree too, this was by far one of the best storylines and easily has the best acted characters (the cenoibites have always been good but the other films were always let down slightly by annoying characters)
love the way it shows hell can come in all forms

Anyone know more movies like this? its my fav in the hellraiser series, its just awesome.

That's probably because he was portrayed as a sadistic sociopath in the third and fourth.

I think that this version actually has him *closer* to the way he was portrayed in the first two. Remember how in the first he said that he and his crew were "Angels to some, demons to others"? In this one, he seemed more like a terrible arbiter of justice than the outright villain of 3 and 4.

I think that "Deader" is the worst sequel of the lot, hands down. Revelations at least had some of the original concepts and not much CGI was used, a plus.

Inferno is THE best sequel for me, (exclude 'Hellbound') though it had a few flaws. The ending was a bit unsatisfying, WHY actually all this happened. But ignoring all that, it was mentally gripping, highly disturbing & the graphics never reminded me of some stupid animation movie. Sheffer did his part pretty well (again it was a bit awkward at the end) too.

I don't understand why all this much of hate to this flick. "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" yet this flick was not 'dumb & flashy' like most of the other sequels were, and that pretty much makes the best sequel till date.

I fully agree. Part 5 is well-made! I like the concept of exposing a corrupt detective Hellraiser style too. Plus, I love the new cenobites, especially the one with a head/arms and no body, yowza! That's creepier than the monster that ran after Kirstie in part one! Oh, and the kung fu cowboys, priceless!

Inferno is definately the 2nd best sequel, only bested by Hellbound due to more Pinhead.

It's funny how we all seem to agree that this is the third best of the entire franchise behind the first film and Hellbound... yet this is still rated fairly poorly on here.

Either way, I enjoyed it a lot as well. I don't know how the other versions are, by the version I saw had a pretty gritty 35mm look to it, which actually improved the atmosphere a lot.

Those movies are rated a 7 and a 6 respectively though, so the third best being a 5 makes some sense.

reply

I, for one, loved the 5th installment. The (FOR ONCE!!!!) original storyline. The troubled main character, the awesome nightmare sequence etc. Pretty much everything. lol.

reply

Inferno might actually be my favorite sequel in the series. Very underrated.

It wasn't perfect but I did enjoy how they used psychological torture instead as (like you said) it's the most original any of the sequels have gotten.

I'm actually incredibly surprised that there are people who are this passionate about Inferno. I'm even more surprised that the OP insists on showing people Inferno as if it were a proper sequel to the original film (then again, he enjoys and recommends Hellseeker and Deader, so...not that surprising). For my money, and probably that of anyone with a modicum of taste, the ACTUAL sequel, Hellbound, is superior in every respect. Not only is it a better movie, it's a better followup to the original and an actual continuation of the story.

I thought Inferno was an average film in its best moments, and totally worthless as a Hellraiser sequel. The first two films in the series are horror classics that none of the sequels came even remotely close to rivaling, especially the direct-to-video cash-ins (part 5 through 9).

reply

The only good film in the series is the first one. I may have actually hated Hellbound more than 3 and 4, because my expectations were significantly lowered after I was severely disappointed by part 2. I have no idea why it's so well-respected - it's also a silly and over-the-top film with excessive violence and continuity issues with the first. I actually liked Inferno more than any of the other sequels - it is a terrible and derivative film with awful acting and direction, of course, and isn't really a Hellraiser movie - but the exact same thing can be said for the other sequels, and this one is just more entertaining as a film and a little closer to what I liked about the original, even if it is basically just a Jacob's Ladder / Silent Hill 2 sort of thing.

reply

Yes, it's wasn't bad. I liked it unlike parts 4, 6, 7 and 8.
