Why did Russel Crowe and Meg Ryan have to kiss in this movie?

That was the randomest most unexpected thing ever.

Why did they have to? I say, why not? I like some romance in my action flicks if I can get it. The purpose of the kiss was to show that Terry was in love with Alice and that part of the plot made the story better for me.

reply

Damn, you're so right ! This kiss just made the movie "complete" I was shocked too when they kissed, but at the same time it was so romantic<3 I did read somewhere that it would be a huge love scene with Russel & Meg, but becoz of some reasons they cut it of.. That's prob why this kiss scene didn't suited as well. I thought it was brillian<3

reply

I'm glad they didn't have a sex scene. It wouldn't have fit the story because it would have damaged the two characters. What they shared was a fairly innocent passion which is a refreshing change from all the t&a and groping that's all too commonplace in films.

To err is human; to forgive is divine...and human.

From what I remember the love scene was cut because test screen audiences didn't agree with her sleeping with Crowe's character whilst her husband was being held hostage

reply

Jane, you gave the answer. You're right. The kiss added pathos. Terry had fallen in love with Alice. The irony is that he rescued Alice's husband...and that ended any chance he had of having her.

reply

I thought that kiss was so tender and appropriate. He wants to show his feelings but he also realizes the boundaries. He steps over the boundary with a kiss JUST ONCE. To let her know. Without expecting any answer or for her to change her marriage or for his to change his mission. Awesomely heroic!

My, we're certainl judgemental, aren't we? I mean, considering you have absolutely no idea what is going on in any of these peoples' personal lives.
Mind if I use your sig with a minor change?

"you ma'am, are a moron."

reply

MrsKrabappel, you wrote: "cause they were fcking at the time, while she cheated on her husband dennis quaid "

Gay Talese on infidelity.

"Here's what people don't get. Sex is not that important. It isn't the most important thing in any relationship. Marriage is never about sex, and yet in American fiction so many stories and novels present a sexual dalliance as an unpardonable sin. (In real life) I never thought that should be true. Marriage is the main event. These other relationships bring me into worlds I would otherwise not know. These relationships have helped our marriage. ..I think of all these people who get divorced over minor matters...I don't see how people can live in conventional marriages. "

Gay Talese has a fifty year marriage with a very accomplished, independent and fiscally successful wife.

Well, you could've fooled me. I suppose Gay Talse may be right.

Seymour Skinner: You were right to be suspicious Edna. To the Crime lab!

It was totally expected, apparently you weren't following too closely. Although, after that, I fully expected him to get killed during the rescue.

Alice (Meg's character) was starting to have feelings for Terry (Russell), or at least be attracted to him. He was starting to fall for her as well. Apparently there was a scene filmed of the two of them giving in and having sex. I'm not sure where it was in the context of the film, but it was definitely before they found out something went wrong, the deal seemed to be off, and it appeared that the husband might be dead.

Anyway, as said in a post above, it was left on the cutting room floor because there was already some negative publicity against Crowe and Ryan for their affair. So the kiss seemed to appear out of the blue. However I saw this movie without realizing there had been a sex scene that was cut, and it took it as Terry kissing her to show her he had feelings for her. Because despite his feelings for her (or maybe because of them), he was going to rescue her husband, and he knew there would/could never be anything between them going forward.

There's something strange about altering a film's story because of what may or may not be going on in the actors' lives. It's ridiculous. It's like - "Oooo, what will the public think? The public disapproves of their (alleged) affair and so we don't want to make these sensitive souls unconfortable by showing them making love onscreen..." Give me a break! It's about the money but it still makes no sense. Would a love scene between them in the movie have really hurt ticket sales? I seriously doubt it. Probably the opposite would have been true.

if i was about to risk my life to save her husband and we knew we liked each other id def do it. might not make it back alive

reply

I agree with the OP. I just didn't feel Terry would lean that way and it felt like a leaden weight was being added to the film which BTW was a minimum 30 minutes too long. It may have been epic length, but really wasn't telling an epic story. I just think the film would have worked better devoid of romantic sub - plots and corporate machinations.

reply

I thought it was a bit of a surprise too. Apparently this was expected, according to the back of the DVD case, "and as both confront the gnawing awareness that they're attracted to each other"...

Even though I read this before I watched it, I didn't get much sense of it during the film so I don't think this growing attraction was done particularly well.

Just as a side note too, until he had is hair cut the guy playing Kessler was almost unrecognisable as General Ourumov in Goldeneye.

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!

IMO ... a "love" still born!🐭

reply

Bingo...you're the only one in this thread who gets the scene.

reply

Seriously? It had been obvious for some time that he was in love with her...David Caruso had even confronted him over being in love with her, before that. He was about to put his life in serious danger to rescue her husband...he knew he might not be coming back, and if he didn't, he wanted to show her how he felt. He had been suppressing his feelings and holding back for some time. There's even a scene earlier when Peter's sister is leaving the country to come home and raise the money, in which Meg catches him staring at her longingly with great emotion - and she blatantly notices it, and becomes quite uncomfortable.

reply

Correct.

Meg might have accidentally improved the film by insisting the sex scene be removed. The kiss was surprising, sudden, and seemed like a rare impulsive emotional moment for uber-professional Terry, and Alice was clearly onboard with it.

I felt sorry for Morse who has now been demoted to cuck but has no idea.
