Homage to Fritz's M
The scene that Alzbetka bounces a ball on wall and sings a song with lyrics of the story is an obvious homage to the beginning scene of Fritz's M. Fritz Lang is a great German director, and M is his greatest work.

You know what else is a visual homage to M? The scene in front of the school where Alzbetka runs across the street to avoid the Otik's mom. It's got a placard that says "School" just like in M. It's almost the exact same shot.
shareAnd David Lynch's Eraserhead is widely homaged as well.
