Bomb!

Budget 28 million. Pretty good.
Box Office 14 Million. Terrible.

Can't believe it. I always thought it good. People in the theater loved it every time I checked it out. Great fun movie. Deserves better.

This film is actually very original in the way it's made. Most Carpenter's films never made money back... this film's appeal hides in its uniqueness that only some people can appeciate. I am glad that not everyone can see the film the way it's made to be seen. The ones who see the power and genius of this film have very refined tastes.

True. But being a Carpenter Fan doesnt make you special. The man has made many bad ass films. Anybody could be a fan of such a great creator.

I don't understand why "Most" of his movies dont make the money back. They are highly quality fun. I think Vampires made a bit more than its budget but I also have Vampires rated higher than this but this could've easily made a lot of money. Its a great theater movie. Dont know why it was so hated.

Carpenter's films are at odds with the tastes of the public, I think few average people like his films in my experience, maybe Halloween films would be an exception though, Carpenter's films are not targetted towards a wide range of emotions and the audience, they demand a "special" interest, whereas most mainstream films can attract a wider spectrum of the audience of any kind, because they usually contain more a universal appeal, that means they are rarely genre films anyway, also include all kinds of emotions but never go too far to challenge the human senses, some people dare to call such films bland for that reason, which is fine, so yes I think being a Carpenter fan can make you special, only in that sense, that you probably have a special taste, although everyone is very special in their own way.

Personally I think Ghosts Of Mars deserves to become a Tv show that explores the colonies on Mars, and all these adventures like what happens in this film, I wonder if there is even one single show that is set on Mars with people living there. I would also welcome GOM novellization, so much to tackle that the film didn't do, but only hinted at. This is the only film in existence that is on another planet that made me imagining so much about what is going on with very little shown. It's almost like reading a novel instead of watching a film. This film kinda reminded me of the Quatermass series. I always felt that the filmmakers behind Aliens films could take some inspiration from this film about how to properly respect the audience's imagination, imagination tends to be sacrificed for the sake of intellect, that includes logic, very self limiting, because imagination can always get you much further and provide any way beyond anything as long as it respects the narrative boundaries. I like how Carpenter helped the viewer to see thru the eyes of almost every single character, including Martians and their backstories, absolutely incredible amount of information all providing atmosphere and blurring the lines of good and evil. He was ahead of time back in 2001, now it's become more of a narrative standard of a lot of films being made these days.

I totally agree when you see many movies you can see his influence in them but a way watered down version. People dont get how great he was. He only made the best season film of a special season and created its tune as well which is also among the tops. If you see the new Halloween is a barf. One thing I do notice is that he leaves a lot of holes in his stories and movies maybe for budget reasons or to leave the door open for a sequel or novel that never materialises which I dont like since I like everything explained. Examples Vampires, Escapes, it does leave for imagination but he does it in a way that gives an interest and leaves you empty handed. I hope he didnt do that and actually told the full story. Because as I said his stories are interesting. Ghost of Mars I wasnt a big fan of though I did enjoy it because it had many plot holes and it was actually was one of his lesser good ones showing the gigantic list of good ones he has. And though I was a fan of Ice Cube his character was annoying and he sort of played himself rather than an interesting character and I hate that about movies and celebrities. Going by what your saying I think it wouldve gone good as a graphic novel. Ive been reading many and one of the ones Ive been reading lately is swamp thing by alan moore and it goes so well and gives so much life, detail, and art it is worth reading and enjoyable. I think Ghost Of Mars has the right look for many awesome drawings and as you say adds to the imagination. It’s a shame they didnt make a sequel like both Vampires and Escape they had so much potential and were so enjoyable we ended up feeling cheated we didnt get the sequels and suckered we got hooked to begin with.

I agree. I've seen it many times - in fact, it's one of my favorite horror films. Right up there with The Thing and In The Mouth Of Madness (just to name two).

I don't know. I like the idea of the movie and give it a pass on the sets due to budget, but the acting and script aren't great.

I like the villains. The language sounds silly, but the self mutilation aspect is awesome.

It's weakpoint is the script. The actors are genuinely good actors. The script just didn't seem to follow their natural cadence. Oh well, It's a guilty pleasure of a movie.
