It is unacceptable how lazy Carpenter became.

Enough Said

reply

Everyone knows that already, so it's not worth much to start a new thread if that's all you've got to say.

reply

The only thing unacceptable is to call him lazy. He truly is magnificent and if you disagree then direct your own films and keep your mouth shut.

reply

I agree with the above poster. Shut your mouth or do something else if you think you can do better.

I don't think John Carpenter was lazy at all. I thought that this was a decent film, but not one of John Carpenter's best.

I thought that this was a decent film,
Then your opinion is null and void.

I don't know if Carpenter is lazy or just lost the magic for a while (Cigarette Burns was terrific though) but telling someone to make their own movies or shut up is a stupid cop-out of real discussion. If you don't want to discuss movies, DON'T LOG ON TO A MOVIE MESSAGEBOARD. This is a place to swap opinions and ideas, not a place to just give blow jobs to your favorite directors.

Really people, if a politician messes up, do you tell his/her critics to "shut up or run for congress and see if you can do better"? Get a grip.

reply

I agree it's always a stupid way to go on IMDb. But the op was pretty stupid and annoying too. Writing a title followed by "Enough said." doesn't exactly inspire a noteworthy conversation..

He might as well have been lazy with this film. The action is staged so poorly, the extras had Zero direction and it can be clearly seen. His worst film, and I love me some Carpenter but he did not have his heart in this one.

and you need to seriously calm down.

Honestly, I disagree. I've loved JC flicks since i was a kid in the 80s. Today this is one that I find most rewatchable. While Big T in Little C and They Live are amazing on all my personal entertainment levels, I find a lot of JC classics like Escape from NY and the Fog to be too muddy and sluggish to get into for a light, fun time.

GoM is like getting together with old friends and that might be how it was intended as a swansong. Bigger budget, bigger names, simple story, action and quips. What more could a guy ask for? Six demon bag?

i can only agree, this film is nothing short of atrocious and i think it is frightening that anyone would think any different.

reply

Erm, nope, its not enough said, cause basically, you said nothing.

I have a feeling that you're way off on this.

The difference between old Carpenter and new Carpenter is, old Carpenter did it for the art. New Carpenter does it for the fun of it, and it shows; in spite of their shlockiness, every new Carpenter movie has been a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

reply

He's always made fun movies with a certain B movie sensibility that allow you into their world. If you dont like it move along.

I think he made a conscious decision after Halloween and 'The Thing' not to use his movie making powers to psychologically harm people. Those films were too intense and literally terrified people and possibly psychologically harmed some people.

Since the mid 80's his films have always winked at you like 'this is just a movie its for fun not to harm you'.

Thats modern John Carpenter love him or leave him your choice.

I agree, dcw-12. It seems to make sense. And interesting thing about The Thing is how tame it seems to be today. No matter how many times i watch The Thing it simply is not as strong as in the 80's, and i think the reason is that most movies since the late 80's and early 90's started questioning or/and subverting the power of cinema. The first time i saw Last Action Hero i knew we're going in the wrong direction. And look what Carpenter did with that, he made In The Mouth of Madness, the film that made the film illusion real again, at least he tried. Something happened since then, and it just isn't right in my opinion, it just isn't the 30's/40's anymore when people were thinking if King Kong was real or not.lol. The Thing today would not be shocking anymore. Because the magic of cinema is gone! people don't believe what they're seeing as much as back then. So, i don't think we should blame Carpenter for being so restrained, we should blame industry and ourselves for looking behind that magic. Just look outside, it seems that everyone today is a film student, it's ridiculous. Sometimes i wish i was an innocent kid again.

I was going to post about this but you guys summed it up already. I don't think he ever stopped doing his thing, it's just the audience has changed. I saw the ratings for his recent movies (Vampires, Ghosts of Mars, etc) and thought well I should probably avoid those. Then years later I finally watched them anyway and they turned out to be just as entertaining as his early work.

its revisionist thinking to imply that Ghosts of Mars is more lazy than Halloween.
I strongly disagree....

Judging from your spelling and grammar, you're either a kid or a retard, so you'll have to forgive me for ignoring your opinion that Ghosts of Mars is better than Halloween.

I disagree with you. I am 26 years old, saw The Thing the first time 6 or 8 years ago when I was already highly desensitized to movie violence and horror. I mean, I had watched it all. And The Thing scared me *beep* and utterly horrified me. And now its definitely in my top 5 of favorite movies. So I dont necessarily think it has no lasting power. It just might be that you watched it back then and remembered it even worse.

Its the same for a lot of directors, they make a handful of great films then spend the rest of their careers churning out crap. People such as Tobe Hooper, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas made their names with huge films and once the money started rolling in, their interest waned. Simples!
