Frickin rip off...

Duke Nukem stole half of his lines from Army of Darkness...sure this is America, and sure it is a great game, my favorite FPS shooter to this day, but this is something that cannot be forgiven! Ash could kick Duke's @$$ any day!

I'm not mad at Duke, merely making mention of it is all. Ash could still kick Duke's ass.

Would it make you feal better if I told you, that *all* the one-liners in that game are stolen from movies? I think it's funny.

Indeed...I remember him screaming at the lady...something like 'Yah look here? Friggin Frag Face!' Priceless!

I loved that movie.

At any rate, I was sure the lines were stolen from movies, just didn't know which movies exactly they were.

For the sake of argument the prototype of the first Evil Dead (Army of Darkness being the third installment of the movie) came out in 1979 long before Duke 1 was even concocted. I won't be anal about it, I just thought it funny is all. Everyone uses those lines now...and that is sadly the beautiful thing about america.

Yes, that is correct, Duke got most of his lines out of Army of Darkness, well at least Duke is quoting from the best!! : )

But hey, what is this X would kick the ass of Y, those are only fictional characters people, let's not get too excited.

Duke could kick the $HIT out of ash any day of the week.

Come on it's DUKE!!

"Play it cool, boy."

reply

Yeah, it's clear nobody on this board has heard of an homage.

reply

Why are we making a fuss out of this? Sure he said one-liners from other movies, but that makes him cool. It was so awesome the first time I heard him say "Hail to the king baby!", and in Manhattan project he says "Say hello to my little friend" (I'm trusting you know where that's from). I wouldn't call it rip-off, but I'd call it a homage like the above poster said. And if he had no one-liners and didn't say stuff like that throughout the game, he wouldn't be as cool as he is now.

HAIL TO THE KING BABY!

I respect the fact that they copied it from the movies,i just dont like it when you hear geeks using the quotes and saying they are originally from Duke Nukem, and then i say 'Actually, they are from a movie called Army of Darkness(Evil Dead 3)and they reply 'No they're not you noob fag'.I mean thats just rude, what the hell is a noob fag anyway??

the creator of duke nukem is a fan of evil dead. and he liked evil dead so much he put some of ash lines on duke nukem.

reply

The video game "Blood" took one-liners from "Army of Darkness" and "Jaws".

reply

Jeez, people are still bothered by this. The whole point of Duke's one-liners were to reference or rip-off other games, movies, or even news programs of the time. That's the whole point of the character. 3D Realms are completely open about they're borrowing lines from things, and they never claimed to invent "Hail to the king, baby." or any of the other lines.. he rips off a million other things, not just Evil Dead. It's just that those are the only lines people recognize.

I'm sure if people recognized the origins of all the other lines, they wouldn't be so quick to pit nerd-hypotheticals... Person Who Isn't Real could TOTALLY kick the ass of Person Who Is Even More Not Real.

Look into these things a little more and maybe you won't lose any more sleep over a video game character.

No offense (I love Evil Dead), but I think Duke would win the fight. He isn't just one badass, but a composite character.

reply

Duke Nukem features a lot of references to horror and scifi-movies. I don't think there is anything wrong with a friendly tribute.

PS: Not the entire world consists out of America...

reply

Duke Nukem is a parody of all action hero movies and B-Movie Sci Fi Horrors. That's what makes it so fun.

Episode 1 (LA Meltdown), Level 1: Hollywood Holocaust. It's a Duke Nukem II pinball machine.

What about this: "This is K.T.I.T, K-tit, bringing you the breast - ah, the best news (or tunes?) in town."

By the way, a lot of games homaged Bruce Cambell vs. The Army of Darkness, someone mentioned Blood, well don't forget the shotgun/chainsaw dude in Quoake or the fact that you had both of those weapons in Doom 2, the double barreled was actually referred to as the "Boomstick" in the manual IIRC. Id, apogee and 3D Realms guys must've loved The Army of Darkness.
