Gives me the creeps

Something about this movie really creeps me out. I did think it was very entertaining and imaginative, but maybe it was a little too out there for me or something. The fooglies or floopies or whatever they're called kind of scare me, and I'm 18 years old, and something about Alan Cumming's character seemed a little pedophile-ish to me. It just overall doesn't sit right. Did anyone else get this feeling?

Absolutely no way! Floop is not a pedophile at all. He's just an imaginative man who, really, never grew up. I don't see how you can think of him as a pedophile; I see him as completely non-sexual.

reply

Maybe it was because he seemed to have a lot in common with Michael Jackson... personality-wise.

I heard he was based on Pee-Wee Herman.

NOTE, not Paul Reubens, the actor.
But Pee-Wee Herman, the character.

Either way, I thought this might be Cummings best work.

I agree. The fooglies are whatever their called, freaks me out too. They always did since I was 11, and i'm 14 now.

No, I'd have to agree with PinkLemon, this movie is disturbing for some reason.
A kind of Alice in Wonderland brand of not-quite-right.

I thought Cummings was very much like pee-wee herman, and maybe thats why its reminds people of Depp's wonka (hahaha, not depp's d**k).

Overall i think Cummings is a pretty poor actor, but did alright in this. Maybe he should take up children TV

reply

i know what you mean, something felt, odd, to say the least about the movie, like the director was on the verge of having child porn in the movie..

reply

yah...I have the same feeling from the movie!

I agree, it properly terrified me when I watched it as a kid. I couldn't sleep for days.

reply

It was on tonight and scared the poo out of me, and I'm 28. The Floogies scared me and the transformation of Cheech Marin to a Floogle scared me too. Brrr

That and the android children. Freaky!

I remember when Spy Kids came out, I was pretty young and I was obsessed with it. It was creepy and that's what turned me on to it. I think if it was a normal, non-nightmare inducing movie for kids I would have totally just said forget it. :D

It ahs been a while since I seen this movie but for me anything that shows people losing their humanity or their (for want of a better word) "Essence" creeps me out there was a movie series called American Ninja and the later of the sequals had a similar machine that turned GI Joes into enemy warriors and to me seeing some-one die wasn't upsetting but these people becoming something that they were not meant to be was

Hell is other People

^ Completely agree. Never thought of it that way but now that you mention it, that's exactly why this movie creeped the heck out of me when it when it came out. It also reminds me of how terrified I was by that disney Atlantis. Ugh, put these two together and now I know where all my childhood nightmares came from...

Was Floop weird? Yeah. The character was Willy Wonka meets Pee Wee Herman. But creepy? I don't think so. Creepy would be those disturbing fooglies. Those things were nightmarish. Made Oompa Loompas look cute and cuddly.

The character was meant to give off a weird not quite right vibe.

Before we ever learn Floop is kinda bad or even see him, Antonio Banderas is talking to his wife and when he's talking about Juni he says "All he ever does is watch that demented kids show"

It struck me that he would refer to a kids show as demented. And when the woman plays the Fooglies song backwards, Carmen tells Juni, "I told you Floop was a freak"

The creepy vibe was intended.

reply

Carmen does say "Floop is a freak" hahahaha! I wonder why Carmen thought that...
