The movie computer guy cliché...

Doesn't this one ever get old? He needs codes for the security, picks up his phone, and who is on the end of it...

...the movie computer guy! He's in tons of movies, always on the end of the phone, and seemingly able to work magic. He can get you anything, as he's really good on computers. He is permanently sat on his computer just waiting for you to call, as he's the movie computer guy!

Everyone should have their own movie computer guy. They can find out all sorts of details on somebody if you need them to. They can get you access to any place. They can hack databases, government buildings, anything. They can literally perform magic, all while sat in their parents basement. And they're always on the end of the phone, just one quick call and they get the job done!

Most people are just a simple phone-call away. In this cellular world, the least unbelievable thing is that he is always available.

Despite the tropes, I happened to love this character, and all of his variations, in every movie. Kevin Smith in Die Hard 4 is another one I liked. I just love this character!

Maybe because as great as he is at hacking, he's STILL portrayed as a bit of a loser, so I empathize.

Can't agree with you more

reply

Exactly. And they always live with their mother and always treat and speak to them with no respect. Its never a rich, cool guy in his own condo.

reply

You ever realize this movie came out in 2001? (probably shot in 1999?)
The wasn't cliche back then nor can you fault this movie for it.

reply

Dunno, the computer guy in Oceans 13 was pretty suave. Of course he's the only one I can think of. And I guess he wasn't really a hacker.

~~~"Who do you think you're dealing with? Guess again."~~~
reply
Yeah, that guy was a ridiculously cliche character.
Lol.
The guy in the chair? :D Cliche, yes, but it will never get old! If the unrealistic computer wiz serves a good purpose, then it’s all good.
The one in this film cracks me up.
reply
Yeah, I was just waiting for "the computer guy" in this movie and viola, he showed up.
The worst to exploit the nerdy computer person is the TV show "Criminal Minds". The girl, Garcia, makes solving every case a breeze since she's god-all-knowing since she can break any and every code in the universe with strokes on her keyboard.
This cliche has been waaay overused these past 20 years. The lazy writer's crutch.
reply
Chloe from Smallville was pretty ridiculous, too, along with the evolving Mary-Sue from that show Arrow (can't remember her name, but she could hack into literally everything, probably even toasters and microwaves).
reply
I rolled my eyes at the character.
