Why wasting precious time? (spoilers)

Why does Jack/Brian waste precious minutes when De Niro is hanging above the cameras, waiting for him to disconnect? Was he planning what he did in the end? Hesitating? Relishing what he had planned before?
Time was vital for him too, in any case...

I was wondering about that too. In hindsight I think it was to eliminate Nick's [De Niro] free time in the escape tunnel, so that he'd be easily caught. Nick had foreseen something like this though, and went one level lower in the tunnels for the escape.

But that still doesn't make sense, because the timer for getting the scepter and getting away didn't start until the cameras went out. Leaving De Niro hanging(literately) had no bearing on the job itself. The only thing I can figure is Norton just wanted to screw with him for his own enjoyment. He seemed to get a kick out of De Niro getting tired and starting to breathe harder from struggling to hold on.

My conclusion is that Jack was timing his escape with his getaway at the bus station. He knew how much time he would need to sprint from the Customs House to the station. I'm guessing he didn't want to wait too long for his bus while the cops and a pissed off Neil were looking for him.

Pissed off Neil? Also a big Heat fan? :)

reply

Damn I didn't even realize I did that. But yeah Heat is my favorite movie.

reply

Lol. Mine's too.

I think he was trying to decide then and there if it was worth screwing DeNiro over or not, and just went for it in the end.....

And Heat is my all-time favorite film as well!

I believe that Jack was trying to perfectly time his escape to his departure at the bus station. He knew how much time he needed to sprint from the Customs House to the station. So my conclusion is that he didn't want to be waiting for a bus while a pissed off Neil would be looking for him.

I think Jack was just exerting what little power he had over Nick, making him sweat a little.

that's what i thought too before knowing the ending. the theory about shortening his escape time makes sense, though
