It was on IFC last week, so I taped it to watch over the weekend. I thought it was a complete and total snoozefest....I fast forwarded through the tape to watch the scenes w/ Vincent D'Onofrio, but other than that, it was BORING. It was just TOO artsy. Directed by Ethan Hawke....probably just as a vehicle for Uma Thurman.

i enjoyed it, but i like artsy thing. i agree though, vincent d'onofrio wasn't in it enough. he's a terrific actor, they could've done a lot more with him.
shareI liked it but think of it more as an exercise in improv than a unified movie with a unified story.
shareunique. not your typical blockbuster do. but definitely see it. good acting - an "art" film.
shareI watched this about a year ago and found it none too impressive, though not totally without merit. The song Robert Sean Leonard and Steve Zahn perform in the bathroom is a high point in a fairly uneven and undistinguished film.
I watched it again tonight as a bit of a nostalgia excercise, having stayed within the Chelsea Walls in the interim. Naturally I got a bit more from it this time around due to my new-found familiarity with the setting.
If you don't have any personal history wrapped up in it you may well find it unbearably dull, but on second viewing I did think it did a good job of capturing that often dreamlike, disassociated feeling that creeps in when you find yourself still awake at a time your mind and body, and social convention, tell you you should be asleep.
This is the only movie I have ever seen where I've liked all the actors but it was so boring and hard to sit through. I like artsy films and this was an artsy film, but I don't remember seeing anything so boring.
shareExactly. Now I know why is was so hard to find -- nobody purchased it because it was so bad. I am soooooo glad I got this from interlibrary loan and didn't actually pay any money for it.
I love this film...it's so sad but kinda uplifting too. It's understated, but big and the performances are so poetic.
shareI think this is an absolutely beautiful movie. I suspect that the people who did not like the movie are used to the usual crap that hollywood force feeds us. It is not linear, so those people who like a clear beginning, middle and end (much like we learned in 6th grade) will not understand or enjoy this movie. In fact, it's not a story...it's more like a snapshot of people trying to live their lives. If you prefer a story, Hollywood has plenty of "stories" for you.
The acting is wonderful, the characters are interesting, the music is sublime. It's one of my all-time favorite movies...
Totally disjointed film. Having worked in that area years ago I thought it might conjure up a few memories. Nope. Then I thought there might be some resolution to at least one of the individual stories, but outside of the opening suicide ( not even clear why that happened), again, nothing. I agree with the one comment that the music was good, but then, towards the end - or maybe it was the middle - there was this constant repetitive guitar lick which really started to grate after 5 or 6 minutes. Seemed like longer. There's got to be something else in the bargain bin.
sharequite boring
even VDO couldn't save it

Yeah, I'm about halfway through it right now and I just can't f ucking take it anymore. I thought it'd be better given the cast, but apparently that was a misconception, which must be what Ethan Hawke was going for.

same here - I watched it for DVO,too. I am tempted to buy it as a sleep aid.
shareI respect all these opinions.
My take: I saw this late at night on satellite, so I didn't pay money to see this. I had had a few drinks. I was in the mood for an artsy talkie.
This movie was perfect for that occasion, and I really enjoyed it.
