1977 cbs special concert

I have seen this concert and actually have it.This was a great performance by Elvis.I know he wasn't in the best shape of his life but he still sounded amazing and just six weeks before his death. He was smiling at times and having fun which was nice to see.I would say he had the greatest voice ever still to this day no one can touch Elvis when it comes to vocals. When he sings how great thou art,He sounded amazing when he hit the higher notes.I watch this concert performance 2 times a week and I never get tired of it.A must if you can find it just becareful of bad or cheap quality one's for sale. This concert was filmed in color so if someone sells you a b/w copy dont accept it my copy is in color and not 8mm either.

The cbs special was only shown on cbs a couple months after elvis passed away.It was a great concert to watch. If everyone can just watch this and listen to his voice they will have nothing else to say about him being overweight. He still sounded as great as ever even 6 weeks before his untimely death.I don't think they will ever release this onto an official dvd for certain reasons.I love watching this concert though it's awesome.

I have to agree with you mike, although I wasn't very old at the time, I remember seeing that concert and would love to watch it again and again! Elvis was and always will be my favorite singer and actor. No one can take his place on any level. I wish they would put that concert on a dvd. Would love to see it again. 'Elvis on Tour' from 77 should be on dvd as well.

Yeah I agree,I wish they would release an official dvd of the cbs special but EPE/Graceland said they would never release it.I have a copy of the cbs special in probably the best quality you can get.The Elvis on tour needs a dvd release also I have the original mgm vhs tape but don't play it too often because it's old and I haven't transferred it to dvd yet.I agree with you also about no one being able to take his place.People don't realize that he never performed outside of the U.S. and was still an international icon.Aloha from hawaii was proof along with the 68 comeback.MGM might release Elvis on tour sometime in the future like they did with the Elvis thats the way it is.EPE has said they are fully behind MGM for releasing both of them in the same way that the 68 special and Hawaii was released.Hopefully one day we can get em both because they need to release more of those concerts that were professionally taped.

Amen to that! Let's hope that this new ROUND (30 years!!) year can bring us some new material on DVD. I'm crossing my fingers!

Well I have heard that they might re-release This is Elvis in theaters and on dvd this year for the 30th anniversary.I think since the new company took over (CKX) they will release a couple of new things this year.Hopefully they will do Elvis on tour and make it a 3 disk set like the Aloha deluxe edition.I hope they also re-release Thats the way it is as a 3 disk set since they have so many concerts filmed and only give us a small fraction from each one.I don't think they will release the cbs special from 1977 I wish they would because he still sounded amazing in that concert.Look for some new release's this year on dvd, like the Graceland film collection. They should do another big set like that but make it all concert's,2 disk's from aloha,2 from 68 special,2 from that's the way it is,2 from Elvis on tour,And 2 more disks of all behind the scene's footage and rehearsing from the various concert's how awesome would that be if they do that.As a last disk with it should be the Elvis mini series and Elvis the movie with Kurt Russell.

I have a bootleg of the show and the outtakes from both concerts and I believe EPE is making a mistake in not releasing it on DVD. They were good shows, sure there are moments where Elvis is not at his best, but the parts that are so often objected to - like "Are You Lonesome Tonight" were comedy routines. In the "alternate" performance, he and Charlie Hodge do the "gay" version. All the "bad" stuff aside, there truly were brilliant moments in both shows and they deserve to be seen. Maybe a "best from" could be compiled. EPE's official stance is maybe someday.
They could at the least put out a double CD of both shows without the annoying interviews, but that doesn't seem likely in the near future either.
Oh well...

Well, if EPE doesn't release it, they're losing out on a lot of money. The special is easily available on bootleg dvd's everywhere.

As a side note to this whole thing:

EPE has repeatedly insisted they won't release this material because it would hurt Presley's image, although of course segments had previously appeared in both versions of "This Is Elvis" and in one of the "Great Performances" releases.
Now...did anyone notice that on the main menu of disc 1 of the "This Is Elvis" dvd set is a still from the 1977 special, and a pretty unflattering one at that? It's unavoidable to see this even if one were to never watch the '77 parts of the movie itself. I sure noticed, and in not one single review of the set have I come across any mention of it much less the attacks that EPE swears they'd face by showing Elvis from June 1977.
Was this an experiment? Could well be. Think about it...why else would it be on the menu page? Couldn't have been an accident. (And where 'Love Me' is mentioned - from the TIE video version, disc 2- the notices have been mostly sympathetic towards how Elvis looked and performed.)

Thoughts?

What hurts Elvis' image is the 400 lb assclowns-IMEAN-"Elvis Tribute Artists". Elvis here is bloated in the face, has a belly and that's it. Bone thin arms and legs, no manboobs, tiny lean butt. Not fat, bloat, and not dramatic either. Releasing this would more likely make people see an ill slim man with water retention working his ass off and stop the current view that Elvis just got fat and lazy. It'd also show the world that it's the impersonators who are 400 lb blobs and that in comparison, the REAL Elvis was really not fat at all.
