Why did he make the phone call? (SPOILERS)

Why did he turn himself in at the end? I didn't get it.

It's based on a true story...so I guess that's what really happened, too much guilt maybe, although that Gerard guy really had it coming, he gave me the creeps and I kept wondering, they really need to off him!

Guilt over killing someone who was making his life miserable? Gerard had it coming. I wouldn't have felt any guilt after killing him if I was in his shoes.
