DANG!!! I thought this came out THIS year...

BET just now started runnin' the show, which is on right now.

It's really good, plus the guy playin' as "Andre" is kinda cute, lol...

But neways, I was wonderin' if the time era 4 the show was set in like the late 80s or early 90s? (1988-1993??)..the reason I ask is b/c of how they dress it runs around them years.

If nebody knows give some details/opinions, please?

Yeah!Th@ wh@ I was thinking. The music too is the one th@ gives a hint.I believe it was suppose to be 1994-1995 sometime around there becaue in one of the episodes they were playing Coolio "Fantastic Voyage".Plus one of the guys was retail clerks was asking was D'Andre looking for some Grant Hills.Grant Hills was the next big thing to Jordans so th@'s my guess.

reply

Interestin' details, I think I do recall hearin' "Fantastic Voyage" - Coolio in 1 of them episodes. U're also right about the music, it was rather 90s soundin'.

I had just remember where I seen the guy who played as Andre & that was from "The N" (Noggin)'s mini Feb. series in 2005 "Miracle's Boys". He played as the tough brother, Charlie. I didn't care 4 him that much in MB, his best moment/chacater I've seen him in was D'Andre on "The Corner"..that hair style works 4 him...unlike the short cornrows he wore in MB....

Ohh okay the timin' era does fit it. I have a friend from BM but she wasn't the same age as they were around that time. Is the drug-traffic still just as bad in BM..?

I was one of the ones that thought this just came out too. Great series...very heartwrenching. The way it showed the crackheads open sores...screw all those PSA's about not doing drugs. Show someone a crackhead and that will change them forever.

I didn't mean to kill your mom. I meant to kill you.

reply

I watched the conclusion of it last night (part 6). The conclusion was very sad & then good at the same time. That was cool they showed the real people (Fran, Tyreeka, DeAndre, & Blue) at the end. The real Fran sorda resemble the actress playin' her, but the other 2 didn't look nothin' a like. Esp. the real Tyreeka, which she done real good 4 herself in the end, Fran, Andre all of'em. Some past on in 'bout '95 & afterwards..Gary is at peace, That teacher (4got her name) is at peace b/c she's with her daughter now, the rest are just gone...

An excellent mini series & if it's on tv again I'll definitely watch it--be nice if BET could show it ALL 2gether uncut on a weekend, but that might not happen. I'm glad I got 2 watch it.

**btw, I hated that Andre cut his hair..ughs!!!

I don't know if any of ya'll are interested but I couldn't watch the commercial filled episodes on BET. And I'm not advertising for them, but Netflix has all 6 episodes in a 2 disc series. I'm quite sure BET had to do A WHOLE LOT of editing. I just watched the unedited versions this week.

Just makes you realize how drugs can mess up peoples lives.

Oh yeah! BET sure did they edited the hell outta series. Blurry images & sh** like that..I was mad at that. How a channel that shows BET Uncut (even if it comes on real late) gon' have the nerve 2 seriously edit TC?? But I still enjoyed it. I doubt I'd see it on ne other channel though.

I s'pose u could look up info on it by google'n or yahoo'n..u didn't watch the series while it played on BET?

This series was simply too raw, emotional and powerful to be shown cut-up and edited on BET.It was originally shown on HBO in 2000 and I was hooked.I went out and bought the book of the same name that got the series made'The Corner" by David Simon. In 1993 for more than a year he, accompanied by an ex-cop, observed the people who lived, worked and hung out near an open air drug market near Monroe & Fayette streets. One family's story of drug addiction is focused on.I just wanted to post what they said at the end regarding the subjects.

Dinky: was shot and killed in 1995,he was ambushed by a crew from the Lexington Terrace projects

Boo: who survived his initial shooting was shot again a year later and died

RC&Tae: were both jailed around 1999 and released a year later

Rita:died from the abcesses on her arm the year she died wasn't mentioned

Scallio: was beaten by dealers over missing drugs,he died a year later from the injuries of the beating

Fat Curt: collasped on the sidewalk in 1997 and was placed in a nursing home 6 blocks from the corner,he died there from chronic liver failure that year

Bunchie Boyd: Fran's sister detoxed in 1995 but died in 1996 from liver cancer

Tyreeka and Dre: broke up in 1995 for good,as of 2000 she was a part time student and full time hospital employee/their son started 1st grade that year

Blue: stayed clean and works for a drug treatment program

Fran Boyd: was more than 4 years clean in 2000 and worked for a drug treatment program, she moved to Baltimore County and her son DeRodd was in high school as of 2000

DeAndre McCullough: was still using heroin and cocaine in 2000 and was repeatedly arrested and sent to jail,he also fathered more children with another girl

Ella Thompson: the community worker did move away but continued to work at the center. She died in 1998 of a heart attack at age 47/the details of her daughter's death was told on the show "Homicide:Life on the Street" in a on going storyline. An elderly male neighbor was suspected of the crime but the police were never able to get him to confess and he later died without doing so.The show was was based on the book "Homicide,A Year On The Killing Streets" by Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon. He also wrote the the book "The Corner" and the tv show "The Wire".The facts of the girl's murder as shown on tv were also true.

Gary McCullough: died in March 1996 of a drug overdose in his parents basement. His story touched me more because this guy had the skills and knowledge to make it in the world. He knew how to make money on the stock market and build a house with his own hands. He had bought a nice home in the suburbs for him,Fran and Dre.I also read in the book that his brothers and sisters all manage to make it to the suburbs and become successful themselves. They did not want to co-operate or be played by actors in the series. The siblings also tried to talk their parents into moving out of that neighborhood but both refused choosing to stay in the home where their children had been raised.

*Rent or buy the DVD and borrow or buy the book! This family's tragic fall into drugs and the resulting poverty should certainly be a required high school and could be a college course.

Thanx mojo2004 4 the detailed ending text. Don't EVER delete that post--might be needed 4 future references.

Yes, this series should be shown in high school (like a health/family life class). It'd definitely be a good show 4 college esp. if u're goin' in 2 Social Working, or some type of Public Relations field. Let's ya know that people like that DO exist.

I miss waitin' 'til 9pm on BET just 2 watch "The Corner"--now that the series is done..not much 2 look 4ward 2 watch. The latest thing I'm watchin' on BET that grabs my attention is the BEEF Documentary Part II comes on 2night...

Oh..u're referrin' 2 "Beef"..uh..yeah I missed Part II the other night. It's old neways (2003)..I guess they wanted 2 show it as 2 show how the history of Beef between Rappers start..just my opinion, though.

I liked Part I better b/c they talked about ol'school 1st & I favor that era of hip hop more than 2day's...

Thanx 4 the link, I read some of the article.

This may sound stupid or absent minded but I'm just now figurin' out that Charles S. Dutton the guy that directed "The Corner" was Roc, back on the "Roc" show back in '91. I can't believe his name didn't ring a bell..whoa.

Thanx again 4 the info

I agree. While I only seen a few episodes..I still could 4get'em completely. 1 afternoon, a few years ago on UPN they ran a few episodes of "Roc", I didn't know what it was so I sat & watched & I enjoyed it too. 1 episode I remember the most is with Countess Vaughn on there, she was much younger (probably 15 yrs.). If I remember correctly, she played a tough girl role. I wish UPN would've got in2 the habit of runnin' the entire show..but it was justa weekend afternoon slot, I s'pose...

Thank U, mojo2004 4 the late b-day wishes

"Roc" also did an episode with singing group En Vogue and Rapper Tone-Loc.Tone was a thug in the neighborhood and everybody was scared of him.One of the girls in the group wasn't(they played girls from the hood, can't remember if they sang) and he threatened her in front of eveerybody inside the local bar. There was gun violence too.

Cool, I haven't seen that 1.

It might be safe 2 say that "Roc" had a lot of "at the time" familiar people on there..but so do a lot of other shows. Too bad, it doesn't come on Comcast...

Update: Wednesday, March 1, 2006

BET is runnin' PART 5: Corner Boy Blues, as of now. I saw it on the guide earlier & of course now watchin' it.

Btw, Comcast has ROC!!! So now I can catch Roc weeknights @ 10:30 p.m. CT on TVOne. The 1st episode I saw this week was about Roc goin' against this drug dealer I think his name was Andre (lol??). He was runnin' 4 office, & in the end didn't win, but still planned on makin' a change. The ep. I saw last night was that benefit concert where Lou Rawls, Toni Braxton, & Queen Latifah performed. It was pretty good. I look 4ward 2 seein' more episodes.

All I know is it had to take place at least after 93 because in one episode they were singing the song Slam by Onyx and IIRC that song came out in 93

reply

I don't think that it was Tone Loc that you were thinking about. He was a good guy that had a shady past. Everybody, but a few people were supposed to be afraid of a man named Andre. He was the local thug that had money. Tone Loc wanted to help Roc get rid of Andre, but it was Heavy D's character that shot him. I was so mad when they took Roc off. It was a comedy, but it also dealt with serious issues at the same time. I wonder if it's on DVD so that I can buy it.

Thanks for the correction "b73142".Your right.I guess I was confusing that with the role he played on "Early Edition"when he was trying to bump off his client played by Coolio so his sales would increase as a dead rapper.I saw Tone Loc at Pleasure Island in Disney World New Years Eve 2005.My niece bought tickets and he was the main act though she didn't know who he was. I think out of the entire crowd maybe 25 prople were black and there were hundreds in main venue he was in while all the other acts played outside on the street.I'm thinking ok he'll perform people will be happy because their drunk. He did his act and the crowd lost their minds. Most of them had no clue who he was either but had heard Funky Cold Medina before. It was a great night. He was in fine form too. When he finished he came up stairs to our side where most of the black people were and hugged everybody sat down and talked and took pictures with all of us.It was great.Worth every penny.

Do you all know that Charles S. Dutton has a really bad drug past? He spent time in jail for cocaine. That's why he does a lot of work with real life series that show the downfalls of people with drugs.
