Baldurs Gate - The Movie

Whom would you give which role ?

I rate my own choices:
1 (fun choice, I have no idea) ... 5 (totally perfect choice)

Main Guy - (insert your favorite young actor here, personally I would like to see more of Wes Bentley)

Imoen - Drew Barrymore (4 - bit old for that now, sadly, otherwise perfect)
Minsc - Will Smith / Samuel L. Jackson ? (1 - honestly, I have no idea - some big black muscular guy)
Keldorn - Bruce Willis (4) or Christopher Walken (4)
Aerie - Mena Suvari (5 !!!!)
Nalia - Kate Winslet (4 - at least)
Mazzy - Juliette Lewis (4) or Cameron Diaz (3)

Jaheira - Lucy Liu (4) or Kate Beckinsale (3)
Jan Jansen - Ben Kingsley (3)
Solaufein - Billy Zane (3) or Nicolas Cage (3)

Edwin - Guy "Memento" Pearce (4)
Korgan - Robert de Niro (1)
Viconia - Laetitia Casta (3 - dunno how good an actor she is, but she totally got the right looks)

Irenicus - Sean "Boromir" Bean (5 !!)
Bhodi - Alison Eastwood (3)

LOL you havent ever seen Sean Bean as evil villain have you ? ROTFL

I would never cast Sean Bean as good guy... he's just too genial as villain !

I havent seen any movie of him, is he any good ?

And btw, I'm not a native englishspeaker, so the "good voice" of that guy will be lost for me anyway as I'll get a localized version.

reply

I know who to cast as the lead. He is a cross between the superman character and the guy who played the lead in the 1940's version of love story.

Next year 2007 for a new hope via an advanced technology movie.

reply

I could see Alan Rickman as Irenicus, hell I even thought it was him first.

It's quite amusing that you think Will Smith and Samuel L Jackson are 'big muscular guys' and that Minsc's black. I can see Robert De Niro as Keldorn but korgan? Isn't that the evil little dwarf? :) Well perhaps I shouldn't say anything, never had him in my party.

I think Keira Knightley would fit the role of Imoen perfectly. As for the avatar, maybe Heath Ledger. As metioned above Robert De Niro as Keldorn. Edwin.. that guy that played Carla's brother in Scrubs and waiter in Poseidon.

reply

I want Minsc to be black because Dynaheir was black. So why not Minsc as well ???

Will Smith or Samuel L. Jackson got an "1" for "fun choice" meaning I was not serious. I have honestly no idea whom to cast for Minsc. Do YOU know any muscular actor who has also a bit humor and charisma ??? The closest I know are the Terminator and the Rock, and both would fail utterly at impersonating Minsc.

Robert de Niro was also marked "1" for "fun choice". I dont know any good actor for Korgan either.

Imoen is an easygoing childlike type. Keira Knightley is a female Rambo. I dont see at all how you see her as Imoen. If I would be forced to cast her, I would give her the part of Mazzy. Unlike Tolkien halflings, DnD halflings are very slim, so she would fit very well.

reply

Yeah I noticed the "1" but you said "big black muscular guy" later, which made it sound like you referred Smith and Jackons as "big black muscular guy". I'm sure they have well fit bodies and very muscular, but when you say "big black muscular guy" I think of The Rock or Michael Clarke Duncan. I wasn't so much commenting the choice of Will Smith or Samuel L Jackons as Minsc, but more that you thought they were "big black muscular guys". :)

Maybe we were just not thinking of the same kind of "fun choice". Maybe you were thinking of silly fun, I was more thinking of... well I don't know really :)
I do agree though, De Niro as Korgan would be a fun choice, would love to see him as a dwarf.

Also I never played Korgan. Played BG2 two times, good both times, never had him in my party. I don't know which actor will suit him.

I want Keira because she resembles Imoen cosmectics and because Keira is a talented actress (the Hole, Pride and Prejudice, the Jacket), I think she can do Imoen very well. Imoen was maybe childlike in BG1 (I don't remember much from the first game) but in BG2 she was much darker/deeper and had a more serious tone.

I didn't mean to offend/upset you. Just merely trying to have a conversation.

On the otherside of things, I can I think Lucy Liu or Kate Beckinsale are great choices for Jaheira and Guy Pearce as Edwin. Clive Owen would be my first choice as Edwin but I can see Pearce as well.

PS: Dynaheir was black? I don't recall that... (I'm not saying you're wrong) Anyway, Minsc character portrait wasn't black, that's why :p.
(but I'm all for a black actor if he suits the role.)

reply

Yes if you have Baldurs Gate 1, Dynaheir is black, here is her character picture:

http://www.baldurs-gate.ch/bg1/home/pics/dynaheir.jpg

Her in-game character figure also has black skin.

Well, Imoen is darker in BG2 because she has been tortured and witnessed people getting killed (at very least she saw the death of Khalid, possibly also the death of Dynaheir). But she is not darker in the sense that her character has changed. She's still rather a childlike, witty, friendly person who rather prefers standing in the background. Not really what a typical Knightley character is.

reply

Thanks for the pic, now that you mentioned it I do recall her skin was a bit darker :)

Yeah, but Imoen still remain changed. Her conversations between the avatar and other characters are of the deeper meaning, she tries to understand what people have been through, why they are the way they are, how they think etc etc. You mentioned you had a localized version, but in the English version you could hear that her voice was bit shattered and she didn't speak as light and with as much confidence as before.

Keira as I said before is a talented actress. She can act and she can be very witty and light, have you not seen Pride and Prejudice?

Anyway, do bring this conversation further :)

Which character do you think the movie should focus on? Obviously including all characters wouldn't give enough character development or study to do either of them justice.

Since this is a movie, I'm basing this on a 'good' party.

Avatar (I think he should be of thief or bard arch type)
Imoen (She must be in)
Viconia (Hollywood loves love stories, my main would be male)
Minsc (most favorite character by fans)
Keldorn (personal favorite)
Aeire or Nalia (just because we need another girl and I don't really like Jaheira)

also that talking or singing sword must be in it. He/it was hilarious and is perfect for all the one-liners.

reply

I do not have a localized version of BG2; I have the collectors edition and that one was only available in english. Plus I have heared the voices of the german version once in a review from the radio and the german voices where totally horrible.

I havent seen Pride and Prejudice because it got bad reviews and Jane Austen isnt exactly what interests me anyway.

I have seen Star Wars: Episode I, Bend It Like Beckham, King Arthur, and the two Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Knightley, and she was ok but I cant call myself a fan. I was especially upset when after the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie she said she was the big thing of the movie. That was very arrogant because everybody knew it was Johnny Depp with his wonderful interpretation of the pirate captain who was the big thing of that movie.

And in all those roles she was always some kind of a fighter. Thats why I have trouble imagine her to be Imoen. Jaheira or Mazzy or even Viconia would be more appropiate roles for her, I think.

Well yes that would be interesting. Which characters of BG would actually appear in the movie ? To know that, one would have to actually create a script.

1. In the game we have like 250 - 300 hours (BG1 + TotSC + BG2 + ToB). But for the movie we only have 90 minutes. Make it 3 movies with extra length, then we are at maybe 12 hours. Likewise, content has to be compressed. A lot.

2. In the movie, nobody would care about party size limit or experience or all the stuff. So various people could join and leave the party again.

3. And the power of people wont change much in the course of the movie either. Neither would there be many fights, or the insane heap of magical stuff you can allocate in BG2. All such things would make the movie anoying for the viewer.

4. The party from BG1 - which, as we know, would have been, according to Bioware's starter party: Protagonist, Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, Dynaheir - would continue to cooperate in BG2. Sadly, Khalid and Dynaheir where murdered. So we would be left with three default party members, and the protagonist. All other people who join must have some motive to do so.

5. Because it is a movie and not a game, the story would have to be altered. The viewer should be able to recognize the story, but be kept interested in it. New viewers should find it interesting, too. For example, the killing of Gorion like it was in the game was not likely. Sarevok would have hunted down the Protagonist if he would have managed to kill Gorion.

Keira Kightley got an oscar's and golden globe nomination (and a bunch of different others) for Pride and Prejudice. That does get her recognition as a 'serious' actress.

Honestly, I don't care much for BG1 story arch. It's was interesting as whole and in the larger sense, but the events in between and various encounters weren't that interesting imo. Sarevok (sp?) may be a badass but Irenicus makes much better villain, one of my favorite villains all time actually, movies and games.

And btw, I'm not a native englishspeaker, so the "good voice" of that guy will be lost for me anyway as I'll get a localized version.

Well if Irenicus' voice escaped you, this does bring back a good point. If they can't bring David Warner in as Irenicus I don't think they should make a movie at all. Maybe Alan Rickman, just maybe, but other than that I can't imagine anyone else portraying Irenicus as good (or evil rather).

I see I've suggested 6 characters, which wasn't a pun intended. :)

reply

Feh she wasn't black...
She was Rashemi (heh).

I haven't found a copy of BG 1, but I fund it hilarious that Jennifer Hale voiced a black chick. I'm sure she was fantastic as always (aside from SW: Jedi Academy, which sucked anyway), but it still makes me giggle. They could have gotten me. :p

Will and Sam don't exactly have the body to be a 18/whatever percentile that Minsc is. The Rock or Vin Diesel (who should probably play Saverok ftw) would work better.

KOTOR is sexay.

I would think a movie would just wreck it. Baldur's Gate would be better suited to a series. That way you get to see the main Bhaalspawn arc played out in full, and also get to see loads of the quests and characters that you wouldn't have time to show in a film. Say, have 3-4 episodes devoted to a chapter in Baldur's Gate 1, for "season 1", and have BG 2 adapted as "season 2". ToB, wouldn't be long enough for it's own full season, so maybe expand it or jsst put it in season 2.

I understand this won't ever happen, as the budget would be just insanely big, too big for most studios to afford. But I can dream.

reply

Bhodi-Helena Bonham Carter =)

reply

David Warner would need to reprise his role as Irenicus.
Put some random stunt guy in Sarevok's BG1 armor and have Kevin Michael Richardson return as his voice.

Those two were waaaay too perfect in the games to ever change.

reply

To be honest, after painful garbage like the Dungeons & Dragons movie.. I'm actually afraid of the BG Movie idea.

reply

Nobody has mentioned MY favorite character(Anomen)yet....I wonder why... ;)

For Anomen, and I know I'm repeating myself from another thread, but personally, I would have David Boreanaz! I know the choice is a bit unorthodox and that he's a bit old, but I think that he would be good in the role.

But this is my dream-team party and who I would want to portray them in a movie.

Main character (a human, female, paladin, boring maybe but that is what I play as): Me! (seriously though, I'm not sure who I would cast)

Anomen: David Boreanaz

Keldorn: Mel Gibson

Imoen: not sure

Mazzy: Keira Knightley (I think that the portraits sort of look similar)

Minsc: Michael Chiklis

And yes, I realize as well the very slim possibility of such a movie ever being made, but don't rule it out just because there have been a lot of crappy D&D movies made in the past, if everyone did that, then POTC would never have been made since the vast majority of pirate flicks before POTC were crap and the people who made POTC were making a calculated risk in making the movie in the first place.

reply

I really once did such a thread ? I hate those now lol.

Yeah, but Mena Suvari is still just born for the part of Aerie.

I'm going to do this just a bit different, in that I'm gonna pic a few actors/actresses from times past and/or when they were younger. (hey, it's not like the movies likely ever to get made anyway, right? )

Okay, here goes:

Edwin: A younger Alan Rickman. I saw him mentioned earlier as Irenicus, but I think he'd be absolutely perfect as the scheming, arrogant, and easily irritated Red Wizard were he about 20-25 years younger. That would put him around 40 or so, arguably still a bit old, but makeup would take care of the rest.

Keldorn: John Rhys-Davies. No, Davies doesn't look a whole lot like Keldorn. But if you've ever seen his performance as King Richard in Robin of Sherwood, you would agree he can play the part of a noble knight as well as anyone. He's got the deep, fatherly voice for the part, too.

Valygar: Lookswise, Jason Momoa from Stagate Atlantis would be a pretty close fit. But, I'm going to go in a totally different direction here and go with Robert Downey, jr. Downey's not only a far better actor, he also brings the necessary world-weariness to the character (not the least of which stems from fighting his own personal demons).

Khalid: Adrien Brody. I don't know if he could pull off the skittish-ness or not, but to me he looks like I think Khalid would look were he flesh and blood - the thin, slightly gangly frame, the facial features, etc. Good actor, too.

Cernd: Cillian Murphy. Murphy's got an odd beauty and stand-offishness to him that I think would fit well with the soft-spoken druid NPC.

Imoen: Melissa Disney. Disney is too old and maybe a little too heavy-set for the part these days, but she basically IS Imoen. Every interview I've seen with her strikes me that she really is the bubbly, slighty goofy redhead (or is that pinkhead?) she voiced in the games. Youtube her commercial for honey baked ham if ya don't believe me! (grin)

Sarevok: I really can't think of anyone who fits. 30 years ago Clancy Brown might have been able to pull it off (ala The Kurgan from Highlander). The problem is finding someone with both the physical assets (tall, large, in incredibly muscular condition) and able to act convincingly as a sinister and intelligent villian.

Jaheira: I'd probably default to Keira Knightley here as far as available actresses. I don't know how close she would look or sound the part, but I'm hard pressed to think of an actress right now that would fit the character any better. If I could pull an actress out of the past, a young Audrey Hepburn would be the look I'd go for. Whether she could have played a hardass like Jah, I dunno.

BTW., I remember reading one BG movie thread where someone suggested Janine Lindemulder (the porn actress) as Jaheira, which would be...icky.

Alorra (halfling thief from BG1) Audrey Tautou.

Xzar: Crispin Glover (think about it...)

reply

Crispin could definitely play the creepy and insane Xzar.

"Your voice is ambrosia"
"Stop touching me!"

reply

Oh, I concur! Crispin as Xzar is perfect.

Here's my list (With pictures for those more obscure actors):

Main Character: If I were directing the movie (Insert studio laughter here) I would probably want a female as the PC. Mostly because I am female myself, but also because that way, you don't run into the problem down the line of who the canon love interest is, and why Jaheira's romance is squicky, and no, it's not squicky, and here's why... Meh. I don't know who I would cast, though. Maybe Felicia Day, just because I love her and this role would be such a dream come true for her that I know she wouldn't muck it up.

Imoen: While I liked the Anna Paquin suggestion, for obvious reasons, Allison Hannigan is still my No. 1 pick for Immy. Anna just doesn't have that playful, exuberant, eternal-child thing that is so critical to the character, imho.
http://www.fimho.com/wp-content/gallery/alyson-hannigan-pictures/Alyson-Hannigan-images.jpg

Jaheira: Eva Green. She has that somewhat brooding, cold, yet passionate manner in her looks as well as her acting. Plus, she is a veteran to fantasy settings (Golden Compass, but please don't hold that against her).
http://faculty.mdc.edu/lmolina/bond/Bond%20girls/eva-green.jpg

Khalid: I love the thought of Adrian Brody in this role! Especially now that "Predators" has come out and we can all see him as a fighter-type character. I'm not sure he could nail the stutter, though.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.styledash.com/media/2008/05/81159234%282%29.jpg

Minsc: Oh dear, somehow I just can't imagine Minsc coming to life on the big screen... It would be difficult to find a big, brutish guy who can act well enough in a comic-relief part while still remaining one of the audience's favorite characters... Robert Downey Jr. maybe? Someone... cuddly...

Dynaheir: Halle Berry all the way... Not because I love her or anything, but after that whole falling out with the X-men crew over her character not getting enough screen time, I can definitely reconcile her arrogance and primadonna airs with Dynaheir. (For the RIGHT! As I always am...)

Anomen: Chris Hemsworth. I was of the camp that "Thor" could never be made into a movie. I thought that even if the script could be written in a believable manner, they would never find an actor to deliver it in a way that wouldn't make the audience burst into laughter. Then Chris Hemsworth opened his mouth... He is just the right hunk of estrogen brigade bait capable of turning Anomen's corniness into something worth watching. Plus, although blonde, his looks readily fit the bill.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b0ufPN9B3-0/Tb65cNEvliI/AAAAAAAAYN0/mvDCJmtc3s0/s1600/Chris-Hemsworth.jpg

Aerie: Mena Suvari was indeed, made for this role... 5-10 years ago... Sorry, but as it stands, I think Amy Adams could do a decent job in the role. Most people can't take her seriously due to the slew of romantic comedies she's been in, but she actually did wonderfully as a nun in "Doubt." She also has a sweet, little voice. ^_^ This was the only pic I could find with her as a blond, though: http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/080304/miss-pettigrew_l.jpg

Sarevok: Either Vin Diesel or Jason Mamoa from the upcoming Conan movie. Jason might be a bit young, but sadly, between the two, I think he's the one more suited to carrying the role of Intelligent Evil Bhaalspawn. Just imagine him bald in this picture.
http://openbooksociety.com/wp-content/uploads/HLIC/5f963de7d6e13848f7528be1427df6d0.jpg

Irenicus: David Warner would be a dream come true, but failing that, I think Alan Rickman would also do an excellent job.

Bodhi: Audrey Tatou because she is a wonderful actress who has the range and sex-appeal to portray a catty vampiress.
