What was going on at the start of the movie?

I originally thought Trevor was getting murdered in that house. There seemed to be violence then a car pulled out, smashing the side of another car. What is the significance of that and how is it linked to Trevor? Was someone in the house a reception of the 3 pay it forwards?

No no. Completely unrelated to Trevor. A guy held someone hostage. It was a place for the reporter to be, so the guy could give him the car, so he could learn about and begin tracking the pay it forward movement.
