Is Brother a Sequal to Sonatine?

I saw the exact same characters in the trailer and Takeshi's name is Aniki same as Brother so I assume it is. I haven't seen Sonatine yet so I'm assuming that Aniki and his leiutanant did not die at the end and Brother tells the tale of how they met their end in america. Correct me if I'm wrong without spoiling the movie for me. Sonatine that is. :)

reply

no its not a sequel. he uses the same actors quite frequently, and aniki is just gangspeak for "older brother", someone with seniority.

"a book, a video, and something in a box"

reply

Obviously not since kitano shoots himself in sonatine...

reply

Yeah! How the hell did you miss that????????

reply

Well Shaheed79 did say in his post that he's not seen Sonatine yet... and he asked you not to spoil it for him...

reply

I don't give a F if he did. Instead of assuming it's the same character he should watch the damn movie.

reply

All he did was ask a simple question and requested no spoilers. The first reply was a sensible one but there's no need to go ahead and spoil it for him (although I'm not pinning the blame on you, as you're not the one who spoiled it - some people obviously don't fully read the original post).

Anyway I hope he's had a chance to check out Sonatine, quality film.

Does Masaya Kato (Shirase) play any role in Sonatine?

reply

No. If I remember right, Kitano was pushed to include Kato in the film.
There should be some interviews or articles about this online, possibly on fan site www.kitanotakeshi.com. Yeah, read this article: http://www.kitanotakeshi.com/resources/raynsbrother.html
Snip:
"Any trouble with the actors this time?

I was forced to make one compromise: I was pushed into casting a guy named Kato Masaya as Shirase, the leader of the Little Tokyo yakuza. His agent is one of the biggest in Japan and he can be a real nuisance. We had discussions with the Japanese actors in Tokyo before we left for the states, and at one of them Kato came to me and said: "Director, is it OK for me to use cigars as props in the film? I think it will help me express the character." Inwardly, I'm thinking, "What the *beep* is this guy on about?" But I smile and say, "Sure, why not?" But in the film there's a scene where Yamamoto shouts at Shirase and tells him to put out his cigar. That was me talking, not Yamamoto."

As for this being a sequel to Sonatine, that's already been answered but the similarities are present enough for the some to initially think that without having watched Sonatine. Brother was originally an idea Kitano was toying with after he did Sonatine, but it got put off after Kitano did Getting Any? and then had his accident.

reply

Why was Kitano 'pushed' to cast Kato for the role?Masaya is not only a handsome man,he is also a great actor.Did you like his acting in Brother?

reply

Well, I saw Sonatine not that long after I posted that and its a Great Film I need to get the DVD. I'm also glad I didn't read the humungous spoiler left by a careless individual. I had no idea we had to have watched any movie we ask a question about. Or maybe we don't...........

Anyway those are some nice facts about Brother. I need to go see Fireworks next.

reply

Frankly now, though I haven't seen Sonatine and DID read the spoiler, I don't feel that the movie has been quite spoiled for me - the fact that Kitano's character dies in the end of a Kitano movie is so unsurprising...
