Near the end, right before Edward Leeford kills his mother, they have this conversation, and she says to him "Who came into you in the night? who smugded your painting, your portrait, your face, your body?" what did she mean by that?? can anyway one help?

He didn't kill his mother. This is evident by the fact that he drank the wine from the same glass after she dies.
