Yet another potentially good movie that falls apart when it goes for the "surprise/twist" ending. Case in point: Why would the cult risk exposure and investigation by setting up this whole "clue" system, instead of just having Claudia meet them at the Motel in the first place? Also, why would Claudia's husband spend 6 years in a sham marriage, raising the child normally--in her most formative years--when his plan was to corrupt her all along?

shareThis movie was terrible, granted, but I think you missed the point.
The purpose of the sham, the elaborate setup, the whole trauma and clues set for the mother, was to make the impact of the daughter's sin that much more corrupt. They were intentionally trying to turn something innocent into something terrible in order to realize true evil into their reality. So they had to make it as terrible as possible for Claudia.
And again, it was a pretty bad movie.
