Doesn't this director have any imagination?

He included references from Jacob's ladder, Silence of the Lambs, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Seven, Rosemary's baby... just to make this awful movie. If you are going to copy, at least do it right.

Did you guys find references from other movies?

reply

Yep but since it's a foreign movie and a European is taking from great American movies no one cares.

complete nonsense.... the director brilliantly built up the tension (despite poor subtitles)...the ending was a bit rushed but overall it was a success...AND far superior to any US studio film ....the Americans fail so much with their over the top plots, ie silence of the lambs... Nameless is more akin to Manhunter than Silence of the Lambs... and can we remember that Campbells novel was faithfully recreated not ripped off from other 'great American movies....oh, and 'foreign' (giggles) films are usually miles ahead American cinema...
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favourite films as well... funny that...

"Gran'pa was always tha best...."

Actually, I'm an American and it's utterly ignorant and only shows how much you DON'T know by completely dismissing all U.S. studio films. There are many brilliant American films, just like there are many brilliant foreign films.

P.S., If you're a fan of Argento and you dismiss American movies, it goes to show, doesn't it? Argento makes horrendously awful films that are somehow regarded as masterpieces in other countries. You hold his films above American films, yet his films are absolute garbage, Z-grade (at best) material with terrible acting, music, editing, effects, the whole nine yards!

Edit: Suspiria and Opera are exceptions

Bad edititng? Teribble music?? Horrible acting???

You are wrong...the editing in this film is well done, the music and sound design is definitly top-notch -- the sound alone gives this film a very ominous and tense atmosphere and the acting is appropiate. There is no overating and the performance from the actress that played Claudia is heartfelt and well done. Overall, I think this film is a very effective thriller and the only part of this film that was lacking was the ending.

Other than that, the film is one of the better foregin films that I've seen in a while. And yes, while I agree that there are (were) many brillant American films, the current state of Hollywood is truly pathetic. They're stuck on doing remakes of older American films and Asian horror films, adapating comic books and novels. Hollywood has not been generating any ORIGINAL films in like the last few years.

What do you say to that? Give me examples as to why this film is sooo horrible before flaming on peole in this board. We'd all appreciate it.

If you knew how to read, you'd know that I wasn't insulting this film, I haven't even seen it. Idiot.

reply

Woops...sorry. Hehe...that's one of the many reasons why someone shouldn't go on a forum when sleep-deprived.

I read your comment and it read that way...it still seemed like you were trashing it...

And I'm not an idiot. I'm just tired.

Dear God, you are a complete moron.

Wow, seven years later! I've since seen Suspiria and Opera (the former is a masterpiece, the latter is great). Inferno wasn't bad. I've tried rewatching his other films but my opinion still stands on the acting and music, but the cinematography is usually excellent.

What you say is a little bit odd. You say the movie makes references to others movies, but then you say "If you are going to copy...", and then on the end you ask if we also find the references.
The is a lot of difference between reference and copy. When a director references to a movie, he does it mostly out of respect or at least knows that he uses it, When a director copies, it had a more bad aftertaste feeling. Sound more like ripping or something.
Anyways, considering you didn't like the movie, i though your choice of words with 'reference'wasn't a good choice ;)

Btw, I think this is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Sure there are elements from other (American) movies. But a lot of movies do that. And it's still original material (thlough it's an adaptation from a book). The atmosphere is great and that's what you lately almost don't find in an American film. And sure there are great American movies (Mulholland Dr., Heat, Happiness), but a lot of the more mainstream films (from Hollywood) that come out, especially in the horror genre, are mostly remakes, sequels and prequels. Some of them can be fun, but it's also nice to see if they can do something original once again, and not only thing of money and marketing (with this I main movies more in the horror genre, btw).
