The physical defects - any specific meaning?

It was highlighted many times that Angela had a birth defect of uneven leg lenghts.

It was also insinuated that Santini was put to concentration camp ("with jews and fags", like he said, which tells us that he wasn't a jew or a homosexual himself)because of his physical defect: a degenerating skin disease. Yeah, it was later on suspected that he had not really been in concentration camp in his past, but anyway, he did have that skin disease.

And at some point the journalist was flipping through some photos in the secret society's place, and they were photos of individuals with birth defects.

Did I miss some line? Was it ever explicated that they wanted their victims to have visible physical defect of some sort?

I didn't think the film was awesome, but this is something that interests me. The idea of visible defects in this story opens up a more indepth philosophical interpretation.
