Based on a true story?
In the credits it says this was based on a true story.
What was the underlying story? And what is the real name of the equivalent of the woman in Paris that did this stuff for real?
Anyone know?

i didnt know that. id like to know too.
Let's put a smile on that face!
It was based on an article in Allure magazine that purported to be a reporters true adventures in Paris (similar to the storyline). I read it years ago and wish I could find the original online. As I recall, it was more about the madam and less about the woman, cant remember if the divorce bit was true, it was only 2-3 pages long but it obviously caught many people's eyes!
shareMany years later I found the answer to my own question
It was indeed an article in Allure magazine by a woman called Amanda Vaill and was published in February 1999. Info but not a copy of it here:

This is a very thought provoking movie with great character. Some of my favorite parts have the best lines:
******************************
"It is never too late to find out who you are" - when Madam Simone told her that she could teach Joanna to get any man.
******************************
"There is always time to consider anger. Right now, there is music...and music above all should never be wasted." - when Madam Simone was re-introduced to her ex-husband.
******************************
"You represent something - a mind and a strength. It is comforting somehow." - Madam Simone to Joanna when they meet in her office after the big party.
******************************
"If you have enough confidence, they will return. And then you get to decide whether the start or if they go." -'conversation between Madam Simone and Joanna at a restaurant after revealing that her husband left her recently.
******************************
Joanna: "Do you have men on your life?"
Madam Simone: "There are men who pursue me; some men who amuse me; some who challenge me; but none of them change me."
Joanna: "And is that what you are looking for?"
Madam Simone: "That is what we ate all looking for -'There one who makes us better than we ate alone."

*******************************
Joanna: "Where exactly us this going?"

I really like this movie, I wish they would release it on DVD. I really liked Madame Simone's line, "It is not about how you dress, or even how you act, but how you perceive yourself. If you believe it, they'll believe it."
I also liked that Joanna didn't take her husband back. He wasn't good enough for her even before she went to Paris.
