And the winner is...

And the winner is... (no real suspense there) DAY BREAK.

Here's a table with the results showing the ranking of the shows according to number of votes.

Show.....................Gold..................Silver....................Bronze

Day Break...................3
Defying Gravity*.........1
Total Recall 2070*..............................2..........................1
Jericho................................................1..........................1
Caprica*.............................................1
The Middleman*..............................................................2

Remembering we all have one week to find this show. We'll start with it on Friday November 16th. The Day Break board will be previously warned of our arrival! See you then.

Curiosities:

1- *The ranking system still has to be tinkered with. It all depends on the criteria we decide to use. Defying Gravity got second place with one “gold” vote, while Total Recall 2070 got third place even though it had more votes in general (but just “silver” and “bronze”). Same with Caprica and the Middleman. Should we rank according to quality or quantity of votes?

2- I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun with Day Break. I'm excited already!

As you know, I don't vote because I can't always get the show, but Day Break was my first choice here, and it's available on Hulu for free.

I had never heard of this one until you guys came up with it (where do you get these ideas?) but it looks good. I'm a big fan of Groundhog Day and it will be interesting to see how the concept plays out as a drama. The series summary also reminds me of a movie I saw several years ago that involved replaying an assassination repeatedly from several different viewpoints, while you piece together what happened. It fell apart at the end, but the concept was entertaining up to that point. Can't recall the title.

If the possibility of not being able to get the show stopped me from voting, I would never vote because I don't get Netflix. It would be great to get more votes. I think I remember the movie, but I can't remember a single actor in it. If I do I can track down the title.

Went nuts trying to remember it. After multiple searches, I found it: Vantage Point starring Dennis Quaid.

Your point about voting is well-taken. Maybe next time.

reply

Daybreak it is. Hope it's good. Glad DT will be joining us. Has anyone checked the board? is it busy or even active?

I have. No, not really. Last post from 1 day ago, but before that, only Sep 30.

Well, one things for sure, it will be a lot more busier starting next week.

Got the DVD ordered from Amazon. Should have it before the usual between-show break is up.

Last time I tried to check something's availability on Netflix I couldn't because I'm not a current customer of theirs. If that makes or breaks a choice, it would be nice to be able to take into account when considering suggestions. But not nice enough to subscribe to a pay service I otherwise don't want.

Intrigued but a little skeptical going in here. I rather enjoy the "repeating day" trope in a single movie such as Groundhog Day, (even though that one wasn't quite my taste in comedy and didn't adequately address the why and "what broke the cycle" of it IMHO) or the made-for-TV 12:01 with Jonathan Silverman, Helen Slater and Martin Landau. Also loved it in an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess. But I'm still not sure how well it will translate to a series.

Hoping for the best.

I'd've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.

Then I think when suggestions are first presented, and before voting begins, those with availability to Netflix should manifest themselves so we can either not vote for the unavailable suggestions or pick new ones as replacements.

As for me, I try to get the show however I can because I don't have Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, a bunch of things essential to life, you must be wondering how we can consider ourselves civilized, but then this is me. If you think a particular show not being on Netflix is a deal breaker, then I'd like to hear that beforehand from now on, please.

reply

Well whether or not a show is available on netflix or not has never been a deciding factor on what I put up for the vote but when it comes to choosing, if I am considering 2 shows and they are basically the same then i will way how easy both shows are to get. I have no problem getting the shows anyway possible once they are selected. If the group had gone with defying gravity I would have had no problem with it. I say we put up the shows we want to see regardless. I know some people (rightfully so) will not do torrents but my moral compass is slightly askew when it comes to that. So I guess what i'm saying is I think the way we vote now is just fine.

Ok, that makes sense. Just trying to accommodate things for those who have Netflix or torrent issues.

2 thoughts:

1. The first 2 episodes are on Youtube.

2. It would probably be good to give different weights to the different rankings. Here's one possibility:

These are refering to each individual person's rankings:
G: 3
S: 2
B: 1

Result:
9 - Day Break [3*3]
5 - Total Recall 2070 [2*2 + 1*1]
3 - Defying Gravity [1*3]
3 - Jericho [1*2 + 1*1]
etc.

Your idea is great, Franco, and in fact I'd been thinking of something like that. It's just that until recently, when I stepped in as moderator, only the first-place vote counted, and there was also a second that didn't. So, the adaptations I made didn't really change much not to introduce too many changes at once.

Using an "Olympic" system one gold medal tops several silver ones, one silver tops all the bronze ones, etc. Two silvers beat one silver and several bronzes, and so on. Eventually, however, I's wish to use a system like the one you've just described, unless someone (especially some of the more traditional members) complains.

Anyway, what was important in this case is that there was no shadow of a doubt Day Break was the number 1 choice.

Franco, stick around, vote and make your opinion be heard!

reply

I'm glad if that becomes helpful in the future.

Personally, I think 2 second-place votes should be worth more than 1 first-place vote.

Obviously we had no need for such a system with the Day Break vote, but it could help things run smoothly in the future. The system doesn't have to be perfect, because it's only needed to decide votes that were close in the first place. (Kind of like a tie-breaker or sudden-death overtime)
