Was it real? Yes and no.

A lot of the stories or histories of the locations were completely fabricated, a lot of the "paranormal" things were actually rigged to happen (such as doors slamming, lights flickering, etc.), and it's even been said that some of the contestants were plants/actors put in to evoke a certain kind of reaction in the 'real' contestants.

But the FEAR was real, and that's what makes the show so entertaining for me. I never believed in paranormal stuff, but such a visceral emotion in the real contestants was great, even if somewhat exploitative.

This is somewhat true. but Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson were involved working on some of these episodes. Hawes has stated that they were the ones that did most of the research on these places especially during season 1. They changed the names of the locations in order to prevent fans of the show from going into these places. The backgrounds on the shows they worked on were real. Hawes and Grant have stated that places were rigged up to scare the contestants, after all it is tv and entertainment. as for plants/actors, Hawes and Wilson said they heard about it but they didn't know for sure if that was really being done. but yes there were some actors on the show. A good way to get noticed by appearing on something. Hawes and Wilson eventually left the show due to some problems they had with the producers of the show. They felt that some of the challenges were getting dangerous and they wanted no part of that so they left. they said the last episode they worked on was the one involving the table with the ouija board printed on it.
