I beat all 20 courses in 150cc mode using a midget racer (I used Koopa). And not once did I hit a mushroom and get to regular size.

Trick is to get out in front and STAY in front. And the secret turbo boosts you can do at the start of races help TONS.

Koopa was always my favorite, because I could actually control him. The others were too fast and I always bumped into walls and such. It's probably just that I can't see fast enough.
