yeah, I agree, the end is beautiful. I love open ends that leave you with a bit of hope. I have seen this movie a thousands time (almost. LOL) and I never get tired of it. It's always an actual subject. I love most parts of it, especially the scenes where Jonathan is a narrator talking about himself and his situation - like his first night "wake up is 6.30 [or was it 7.30 - my note] - just a good hour after you have fallen to sleep". My favourite scene, if I have to pick one, is when Jonathan is watching TV with some other people and this girl takes his hand and Jonathan tells us "That's when I decided to sign the pledge. Don't ask me why". It's beauitful!

yes the end was awesome i loved when he huged her that was just so sweet i loved it... i also really liked when Jonathan first comes and he asks why there is that plastic cover over the tv and the guy throughs the cup of water at the tv and it goes everywhere and his Jonathan in the head that made me laugh and he just had a stupid look on his face like alrighty then

I Love Hayden Christensen!!!!

reply

I agree, that's a great scene, too! I also love Jonathan's first meeting with Rachel when he starts to talk about her slippers "do they bite?" ;-) There's a lot of great scenes in this movie!

reply

yeah that was a funny scene but i have a question rachel and toby why are they in there like did they try to kill themselves or are they just in the hospital part?

I Love Hayden Christensen!!!!

Call me a pansy but i teared up a bit at the end when Johnathan hugged her. Then again i had a girlfriend at one point that was alot like Rachel in this movie so it twinged a nerve i guess.

reply

I know this is 5 years too late but no, jeff2401. You're not a pansy. I cried when he hugged her, too.

my favortie part is the second scene at the bowling alley, where jonathan comes to toby's rescue. Its just genius the way he breaks the bottle over his head, and has this crazy "i dont give a *beep* b/c i'm crazy" look in his eye... definitely my favorite scene! Other than when they make him wear the small pajamas.

reply

ah theres too many. I like one of them when Johnathon is talking to the Doc, (he mentions about that girl playing the piano). The Doctor says "Do you wanna talk about your Father?" and johnathon replies "No, do you wanna talk about your father?" and at the end when the Doc tells him to go, you can hear Johnathon telling him to *beep* off lol.

"I'm not from these parts. From a little place called England-we used to run the world before you."

reply

yeah, i thought when he broke the bottle over his head, that was pretty cool
and when rachel is slapping him... i just love the change in his face... so hot.

but the movie is full of great scenes and witty lines

My fav was the beginning where Cillian had the whole argument with his brother, then ran in and grabbed the vase with the ashes and said "we're going for a spin, we'll see youse" and walked out. I was laughing hard there I'll tell you, he delivered the line spot on.

reply

Although this isn't the best part of the movie- the ending is very sentimental and all, I really liked the beginning when Jonathan walks up to the coffin and knocks on it as if expecting someone to answer. Kind of dark, but still I find it humorous.

reply

i love the scenes when Jonathan walks with Rachel in the garden, along the gravelpath, when they're both in their PJ's..

and of course the end, it's quite beautiful, the way Jonathan's just made to be there for Rachel. (i may subconsciously love that scene cuz one of my all time favorite song's in it.. "please forgive me" by David Gray.)

Everything that's been mentioned are great moments, and I also like the scene where Toby reads his poem to Rachel. You see that she's wearing Jonathan's jacket (at least it appears she is), and that was just a nice way of showing how close they've become.

reply

what is the name of the song played during the credits?

reply

The beginning was my favorite, as well. Right from when he knocks on the coffin til he tries to commit suicide.
Good movie.

reply

I like the beginning better as well. It was filled with dark comedy.

when toby and jonathan sneek out to the pub,i love that whole seen and the conversation they have after, jonathan teling him about driving off the cliff.

"she's not my special lady, she's my f_ucking lady friend. i'm just helping her concieve, man!"

reply

I think the best part in when Toby and Johnathan are in teh car and Toby is telling Jonathan about his brother dying in the hospital. The looks on Jonathan's face are so expressive and sad.

reply

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention this on any boards yet!
Didn't anyone else LOOOVE the cat lady scene?

"He's fine now! just a little edgy!"

I just LOVE that scene. I laughed SO hard.

That was longer than a Heartbeat...

I like the scene after Rachel gets off cutting herself and Jonathan goes to the recreation room and sits in front of the television with two patients. One of them asks him about a Christmas raffle, I think, and then the woman sitting next to him suddenly puts her hand on top of his and Jonathan decides to take the doctor's pledge. It was very subtle and I think more can be said with silence and gestures than with heavy dialogue.

"...and the rest is rust and stardust."

reply

The ending!!!!

And when he was in her room, and she asked him to just lie on top of her with just his top off. That was amazing!

The whole movie was just great, a very well done from the director. The second i started to watch it, i was hooked.

a brilliant movie

reply

The ending. Made me cry. He loved her unconditionally; he could see how fragile she was but he loved her anyway.

Hard to say, the best of the movie is the acting. I mean, you cannot go wrong when you have such talented actors like Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea working together. To me the best moments are when they both interact. The scenes that they share are as good as the scenes between Timothy Hutton and Judd Hirsch in 'Ordinary People'.
'On the Edge' perhaps is not as good as Redford's film but I was pleased from start to finish. Great irish flick.

My favorite part was when the doctor pulled Jonathan aside after the incident at the bowling alley and said "Isn't it a relief to be alive?" I thought it was Jonathan's turning point, and I also love the Doves song that starts playing right then. I agree that the beginning was very enjoyable, too.

I was about to type just that....another favorite of mine was when Rachel asked "Do you think you love me?" and Jonathan replied " I know I love you."

if you never lie, then you dont have to remember anything- Mark Twain

My most favorite scene is the second bowling alley scene where Johnathon stood up for and protected Toby. You can see the courageousness, intensity, and even a bit of insanity in his eyes and face. As y'all had said, it was a turning point for him and I think it showed more that he has a heart.

The ending was emotional and beautiful. It was so sweet that Johnathon talked Rachel out of jumping off of a cliff and love her unconditionally.

Basically any scene with Johnathon and Rachel, and Johnathon and Toby.
