Machinery: it requires skill, stamina, and patience. In today’s fast paced world the automobile plays a key role in how people get from one place to another. What many people don’t consider is how the process of manufacturing those convenient transporters has evolved over the last seventy years.
The movie beings with celebratory music, the same kind of music you would expect to be played as soldiers are returning from war. There is a short introduction to the subject of the movie: the skilled workers of the automobile industry. The movie follows the process of making the pieces of an automobile as well as the construction of the vehicle itself.
The movie is clearly about how the company wants the public to perceive the process of making automobiles. Chevrolet wants everything to appear as a big piece of the puzzle. They want to portray the process as a difficult and hard labor filled task that should be appreciated. Initially the viewer might think that this movie is meant as a tribute to the workers, but as the production progresses one realizes that this movie may just be meant to show the triumph of the auto industry. The agenda that the company has is to control the public’s opinion of the auto industry. They wanted to advocate the industry as well as gain support from the public, and the way they chose to do this was to exploit the workers and their daily routine.
The movie was produced by Handy Jam Organization and sponsored by Chevrolet Motor Company. Handy Jam Organization was a branch of Bray Productions, whose biggest client was the auto industry. The films varied from training videos to a type of propaganda aimed at the public’s impression of the industry.
