Failed to initialize Direct3D error

I'm playing this on Windows 7 and every time I try to start it I get a "Failed to initialize Direct3D" error.I have no sound because there is feedback coming from my speakers and no sound.Can anybody help me?Could the no sound thing be affecting the game?

I should have known those alien maggots boobytrapped this sub.
