'Better' documentaries?

I've heard a great deal about how this series presents a one-sided conservative view of jazz history and skips over plenty of important players/developments that the interviewees/director don't care for, and I'm wondering if people here can give me some suggestions for good documentaries that are more even-handed and/or talk about the things this show skips over?
Not necessarily docs as broadly focused as this, it could be things about specific people or periods or whatever, I'm just looking for some that aren't as controversial amongst jazz aficionados.

I would suggest finding the "Jazz Icons" DVD series. Not exactly documentaries, but full performances from various European TV programs of the 1960's. The accompanying booklets include info that may or may not be known to music buffs. There aren't many places you'll find a 75-minute performance by the classic Coltrane Quartet or long concerts by a Charles Mingus group and the Jazz Messengers.

Ron Mann Imagine the Sound would be a great place to start filling in areas the documentary misses.

Unfortunately, as was pointed out by reviewers at the time, this is likely to be the only television history of jazz for some time.

Still it's a botch
