But, I found out that I acutally am a jazz fan! I have always liked swing music, I found out that swing was "jazz", too.

I also like Take the A Train and Take Five. Those are the first that come to mind.

Miles Davis - Black Beauty
anything by Cecil Taylor

What is the song that plays during the scene in the "Jazz" mini-series where Charlie "Bird" Parker dies? It's sort of a sad song...I need to know the title of it.

reply

how bout Satchmo's hot fives and sevens?

course all the others mentioned are great.

individual recordings are beautiful too.

reply

Walkin' (1954) [Davis, although the highlight for me is Lucky Thompson's sonorous, soulful tenor]

Kind of Blue (1959) [Davis]

Interstellar Space (1967) [Coltrane]

The Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording (1967) [Coltrane, live]

In a Silent Way (1969) [Davis]

Bitches Brew (1970) [Davis]

A Tribute to Jack Johnson (1970) [Davis]

All that said, Parker might be my favorite, either him or Miles.

Could it be "Parker's Mood," his somber, aching bluesy masterpiece?

Thanks for posting these incredible lists. I would vote for anything by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Art Pepper, Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, and John Coltrane. Happy listening everyone!

Am still a bit of a jazz novice, but from my collection the faves are -

'Double Rainbow' - Joe Henderson
'A Love Supreme' - Coltrane (and should include my 'Best of' CD with 'My Favorite Things' on the track listing).
'Mo Roots' - Maceo Parker
'Black Beauty...Live at Fillmore West' - Miles (absolute mayhem!)
'Nocturne' - Charlie Haden (I don't think jazz chillout albums get any better than this)

With apologies to Pat Metheny, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holliday.

Why has no-one mentioned Chet Baker Sings (1956)? Surely one of the iconic voices in Jazz music and a stunning album.

I'm not a massive jazz head but certainly dig on Coltrane and Davis, all that cool school stuff.

And Herbie Hancock too. Fat Albert Rotunda (1969) is another great album. I suppose one might be inclined to class that one as funk but it's certainly a brilliant listen either way.
