Miike’s Dead or Alive ending. Major Spoilers.

Again, major spoilers ahead. Don't read before watching!

I watched it for the first time yesterday (just recently released in the US) and was wondering what you all thought of the ending? It seems that after playing chicken with the cars and the final gunfight, Jojima shoulders and aims his rocket launcher while Ryuuichi pulls out his heart (in the form of a glowing red orb?) and both launch their projectile which collide and start a spreading atomic bomb-like ripple in Japan. This, of course, is quite out of place with the rest of the film. What do you make of it? Is it just a symbol of these guys’s strong desire, hate, etc…? Perhaps commentary on over-the-top action in films? Any thoughts are welcomed.

Also, what was that plastic bottle with liquid supposed to be that the boss throws to the stripper in the beginning? Ummm...

I just watched the interview with the director. It seems as if the last scene was altered by someone other than him. So this means this whole nuclear-destruction-of-Japan thing was not in the original script. From the interview, it sort of sounds like whoever it is (I forget who did it, but watch the interview, you'll see) simply "just threw it in". Just because! For no reason!

The director said he wanted it in there to shock the audience, to make us be like "what the fcuk happened?" I guess it worked in that regard. But as for if it helped out the movie? Well, it makes absolutely no sense. I don't know what the director was doing, personally... in making that choice! So yeah, I don't think it helped the movie at all! Maybe it will be explained in the sequel.

So I am totally confused. So seems our director who directed this movie... or so he seems in the interview I just watched.

reply

…I can’t check the interview to be sure but I believe the director, Takashi Miike, was actually the guy who changed the ending of the script around. I think the reason he did this is because he didn’t want to do another run-of-the-mill cop vs. criminal shootout. Instead, he decided to go with a caricature of that cliché and take the whole fight completely over the top, partially to show how absurd it all is but it could also be viewed as a display of the level of desire of those two guys, as I mentioned above.

I didn’t know what to think of it on my first viewing but looking back on it now, it was quite an unexpected twist and ultimately, pretty amusing; routine stuff for Miike though. On a side note, have you seen The Matrix Revolutions yet?

G13

That woman deserves her revenge and we deserve to die. There's your plot!

reply

yep, saw Revolutions but can't say I am a fan. But make to Miike's movie... dead or alive. Yeah, I also cannot say I am a fan of that ending. Maybe it is cool he tried to mess with his audience, but it didn't make me enjoy the movie in the end...

reply

Notice any similarities? Anyway, like I said before, the ending to Dead or Alive was a big surprise the first time through. I didn’t hate it but I wasn’t a fan of it either. Now, in retrospect, it was a fun and memorable way to end the movie. Maybe it didn’t make perfect sense (another common trait of Miike’s films) or was the best choice for the plot’s sake but it definitely was eye-popping and intriguing and therefore, has value as such, I guess.

G13

"I am all men as I am no man and therefore, I am a god."

reply

I think of it as basically Miike's way of raising his middle finger to genre conventions and the general public, who can't seem to accept films that don't conform to said conventions.

Figuratively, I think it is a way of showing how hatred consumed them to the point that nothing but revenge (killing the other one) mattered to them. I think that had either of them had any family left, they wouldn't have reached that end.

reply

Also, what was that plastic bottle with liquid supposed to be that the boss throws to the stripper in the beginning? Ummm...

I think it is an enema bulb. Just think of it as a foreshadowing of the inflatable pool scene.

reply

…that sounds very possible to me!

Whatever you read into it. I think an ending like this is hilarious and very very BRAVE!

reply

The ending has grown on me over the years and I agree, it's actually quite funny.

It's just there so we know how he drugged her to get her into the kiddy pool. When he whispers "I like you" and reaches up her skirt and she flinchs, its because he's just shot a whole lot of heroin (I assume) up inside her.

reply

Nothing like a message board for a crazy Japanese movie to teach 20-somethings what an enema bulb is...

I can't decide whether I like or dislike DOA; I'm glad I saw it though. If the ending wasn't so off-the-wall, I think I'd would dislike it. In my opinion, Miike is an important director for young Americans who want to branch out into foreign movies.

It was pretty sick that Jojima tore his own arm off... when I saw it hanging I was hoping he'd actually shoot it off. Heh.

Another funny thing is how the trailer tries to sell the movie as crazyness (like the intro and finale) all the way thru. It's actually what drew me to DOA, having already watched Ichi, but I was surprised by the slow middle section. At the same time, I was sucked in by the fact that Jojima loved his wife and daughter yet was so distant from them.

Are the sequels any good/better?

reply

…as indicated by the laughing icon on my initial post. I couldn’t be sure, though, because an enema bulb is not something I’ve ever used…have you? And how do you know I’m a 20-something?

I enjoyed DOA all right. It’s not my favorite Miike but it’s far from the worst. And I agree, the insane ending was pretty cool. However, I think Miike often relies on cinematic insanity to make his movies entertaining. There are probably better films to use to introduce foreign cinema, such as The Twilight Samurai or Oldboy.

Oh yeah, the trailer…of course they’re going to use the most hyper footage to draw viewers in, haha. But you’re right, the middle section was slow, which is actually fairly typical with Yakuza features. However, there was still the poo pool and whatnot to keep reminding you that this is Miike you’re watching!

I have both sequels but haven’t watched ‘em yet. Since you’ve already seen Ichi the Killer, I’d recommend checking out Fudoh: The New Generation (for more Yakuza madness) and Audition.

I was guessing that most IMDb posters are young adults so I said 20-somethings thinking that there's probably a 5 year extension on either side of that age bracket (I fall directly in the center). Also, I never even knew that enemas require a bulb of any kind until I read the post. For my ignorance, I consider myself lucky and I suppose that I was mostly referring to myself in that first line.

You'll be happy to know that both Audition and Oldboy are on my Netflix list. Any general background info you can give on Twilight Samurai or Fudoh?

The pool part was f&cked up. I liked the bathroom scene in the beginning because of the "happy" ending.

reply

You’re getting Audition and Oldboy? Cool…they’re both good films. Fudoh is an older movie from Miike but it’s among my favorites. As I said, it’s a Yakuza movie, with the theme of “out with the old, in with the new” running through it. It’s pretty twisted, as you might have expected, but I think Miike had a good mix of style and plot going on here, making it a pretty cool watch. As for The Twilight Samurai…

You guys think DoA 1 was crazy, DoA: Final just might top that.

*SPOILER FOR DOA: Final*

I seriously thought that Dead or Alive ending was downright crazy, but what Final had to offer had me thinking twice. I could give it to you, but then you'd be let down when actually watching the movie. Then again, if I didn't give it to you and you actually watched the movie, then you'd just think I was giving it false hype, so without further ado.

*SPOILERS FOR REAL THIS TIME*

Takeuchi and Aikawa fight and then this white aura surrounds them and they turn into this mech ala Gundam Wing style. However, this mech is quite different, it has the head of a penis, and Takeuchi and Aikawa become these different like pieces of the mech and begin explaining how they remember each other and what not, it was really weird. Finally the Penis Mech flies off and goes to the Chinese mayor who is currently indulging in anal sex with his android slave. Then just like that, the movie ends.

reply

…I haven’t watched ‘em in their entirety yet. I did see that ending though; definitely twisted!

the ending was apparently added because Sho Akiawa & Riki Takeuchi are such big stars in Japan that they didn't want to upset there fans by making one of them lose...so the made it a tie...a world destroying tie

reply

I think it was the first one posted on this board.

That’s a fair theory of the ending there, kronik. Where did you hear it from?

The final fight scene in doa is amazing, its one of the most over the top violent things I have seen in a long time. Every time i watch it I cant stop cheering for the knife guy who had the best aim ever, when he threw the knife at the car after it blew up and stuck jojima in the chest. BAM!! then the ending with the rocket launcher from no where and the glowing ball of spite, gotta love it.

Anyway, I think the ending was more or less symbolic of their entire stuggle. No matter what, at the end of this battle their worlds were over. The detective didnt have his family or job even and the gang member didnt have a gang or deal anymore. Teir worlds ended in that conflict and thus the whole world ended when the big WTF bomb dropped.

reply

I don't know, but I saw it as great comedy. Being rather drunk and given the somewhat gritty even though it's not all that realistic I found myself nearly peeing myself from the "guy jumps through the car window with a grenade" mark until the credits began to roll. And to be honest I think that's it, it's not meant to be symbolic of their struggle, it's just a shoot out ending in a very different context, to throw the audience, the plot, the direction, and amuse. I liked it, it's not my favourite Miike movie by any means but it was a refreshing break from convention.

It’s almost as though he was in a bar and a mate asked him “Yeah, everything’s been done in movies now” then Miike’s along the line of “many things haven’t been done, but as I’m pretty wasted and can’t be arsed to think, this thing hasn’t” “I dares ya…”

Anyway, I don’t think it ruins the movie by any means. Movies aren’t reality, thus they don’t need to be confined by realities rules. Yes it wasn’t in that manner throughout but if you can do it, why not? It’s unexpected, it’s new, and it gets across an ending I didn’t care too much about (this wasn’t a Sympathy for mister vengeance, I didn’t care which one lost) so why not go out with a massive, hilarious bang instead?

Oh, I agree that it’s so over-the-top as to be humorous. But I do feel that it has a more significant meaning than just a different way to have a shootout. I mean, Japan, if not the whole world, started to explode! I don’t think it’s too far of a stretch to relate it to the lives of the two characters, even if Miike just made it up out of the blue. In it’s own unique way, it does feel fitting for them. Perhaps the sequels would shed some light on this but I haven’t gotten around to watching them yet.

”Anyway, I don’t think it ruins the movie by any means.”

Neither do I. If anything, it makes it a more interesting watch. And being that this is a Miike flick, and that Dead or Alive is pretty twisted flick from the get-go, I don’t think the ending is too too out of place.

I think that’s what makes the most sense for the movie. The world exploding reflects upon how epic their battle was for them and how their world was now over. Whatever the case may be though, I agree, it was insane fun and the thrown knife was a nice little touch…gotta love it indeed.

and i have not been dissapinted so far. though some were really bad(like izo) you can't blame the guy he makes what 10 movies a year or something?
is audition good cause it's the only one of his popular ones that i haven't seen yet.
for another great miike movie watch happiness of the katakuris.

it must be the signal that the boss has "chosen" her. because then this bottle has a specific odor that sticks on the girl's body, at least to the yakuza's nose anyways, so that he remembers it the next time he sees her. so then he can perform that sick poopie act with her.
