A copy has been found! (SERIOUSLY)

Reddit user firesaladpeach owns a copy of the tape and is uploading it to YouTube as I'm making this thread. Here's proof:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDlIV-o73Zw

Once the entire movie has been uploaded I'll share the link.

And yes, you are currently reading my sig.

You must burn it! Stave away the demons! FOR SCIENCE!!! But seriously, this is good news. Good reportin'!

This is why I am proud to be a redditer, we get stuff done!

this is a great day.

OH MAN I CANT WAIT TO GET OFF WORK AND WATCH IT

reply

As soon as it is uploaded, whether she decides to post it to youtube or a torrent site or whatever, we need as many people as possible to download it IMMEDIATELY before Nickelodeon/Viacom censors it.

Do you really think nick would censor it, the company has change sine then I think they just are not releasing due to it not being within their interests. There are successful Nick films that remain unreleased.

reply

First of all, Viacom is infamous for their harsh treatment of youtube. They're well known for not allowing their copyrights to be uploaded ANYWHERE if they can help it. And yet, ironically, they suck at giving the consumers a legal option to enjoy their work at the same time.

Besides that, Nickelodeon is ashamed of this movie. Back when it came out, it was considered so scary that an unprecedented number of parents complained to Nick about its disturbing nature. Nick, fearing that their reputation as a kid-friendly network was in danger, decided it was best to simply pretend the film never happened. They never reaired it, never released it in any format, and if you call or email them about it they will literally deny that it exists.

Considering all that, there's no doubt in my mind that this movie will only be up for a few days at most before Nick makes their move. If its uploaded on Youtube you can bet it'll be removed and the uploader banished. If it's on a torrent site or something than they'll probably threaten to sue or something

i know the history and everything and cant comment on vicom because cant say I know who that is. But if they have disowned it then they cant exactly be blamed for a movie they made 11 years ago and disowned it. If they are not interested in making profit then allow it online and have nobody contact them about it.

reply

Viacom is a media conglomerate that owns (among other things) Nickelodeon, MTV and TV Land.

Your argument makes sense and I agree with it. Nick is most certainly NOT profiting from this movie, and there's definitely a demand for it. It's only natural that if the "legal" owners of the movie don't give us what we want, somebody else will. Just look at what happened in the '20's with Prohibition.

HOWEVER, Nick still owns the copyrights to the movie and they obviously don't want it released. They have the will and the legal right to censor it if they want to. I really hope they don't, because they gain nothing by withholding it...but they can and considering their history for censorship they probably will do whatever they can to keep us from seeing the movie

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

It's not worth even trying now with there being the internet nothing stays secret online.

reply

Well... that may not be ENTIRELY true. The movie came out when the internet was already big and it still managed to slip into obscurity.

But, you see that was the point of my post. If we all come together and download it then it goes from being a lost film to an extremely common one overnight and there'd be no way that Nick could ever ban it from existence again.

It'd also be pretty funny watching them try to deny it exists when the entire movie is all over the internet

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

I meant once 1 file exists online there might as well be 10000 of them. As soon as its released there is no stopping it so lets hope this sauce releases it to just online or gives it to someone who knows how.

reply

There's not much Nick can do once it leaks online and torrent/file-sharing sites get a hold of it (assuming they really care, which I don't think they do).

reply

Wow, I just heard about this a few days ago and it's found? Coincidental *beep*

The quality doesn't look the greatest, but I'll watch it, I've seen much worse.

reply

Thats just her recording her tv for proof. She owns an actual vhs and dvd copy that she'll share

reply

Thanks for clarifying, I thought of that after I posted it but wasn't sure.

I'm looking forward to it so much.

reply

Well...bad news, guys. Now she's having second thoughts about uploading it. Apparently, she's afraid of getting arrested or sued for it, but at the same time she doesn't want to let anyone else upload it because she wants to be the hero who put it online. What a paradox.

Anyway, the whole thing's going down at this website: http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/jedpc/til_nickelodeon_r eleased_a_tv_movie_in_2000_that/?sort=new so you can check it out for yourself and stay informed as to what's going on.

She says she wants to wait a few days and consider her options, and I guess that's fair, but at the same time... it's disappointing.

The search for Cry Baby Lane has been a long and futile one for 11 YEARS now, and in one day, because of one random post on this website, suddenly interest in the film has skyrocketed. People who never heard of it before are now desperate to see the whole thing, and to us long timers who more than anything wanted to spread the word, this was the most progress we ever made. And to top it all off, the most unexpected yet greatest possible outcome emerged: Someone remembered that they had a tape! And it wasn't just another troll...THEY HAD PROOF. Any way you slice it, this was an incredible day for nostalgic '90's kids and film buffs everywhere. It's just a shame that it had to end on a sour note.

Honestly, I think she wants money now. It isn't everyday that you find out that the old VHS tape you had casually packed away in the attic is really one of the most sought after movies on the internet.

Yes, unfortunately it looks like the selfish bitch is gonna keep it for herself. It pisses me off that something this rare and awesome ends up in the wrong hands.

And yes, you are currently reading my sig.

reply

It's a load of crap. And its more than just about satiating everyone's need to see this movie. It's about FILM PRESERVATION. As a filmmaker it'd be such a shame to see a film just die off like it never happened.

I walk into Mordor.

reply

I agree. Although Cry Baby Lane may not be some great lost work of art, it's still a movie that people worked hard to make. It's still part of our culture, it stuck with every kid who saw it for over a decade. It had an impact that few if any TV movies do on their audience. It deserves to be returned to the public and since Nick's not gonna do it, resorting to torrents and piracy is absolutely justified in this case.

What pisses me off is that this girl's supposed reason for not uploading it is that she's afraid of possible legal repercussions. And yet... THERE'S BEEN A DOZEN GUYS WHO OFFERED TO TAKE ON ALL OF THE RISKS AND UPLOAD IT THEMSELVES. And yet, she won't give it to them because she wants to be made into some kind of internet hero for uploading it herself. Seriously, she needs to make up her fu_king mind.

I'll be so pissed off if she just decides to keep the film for herself or worse, sell it on ebay to someone who wouldn't take good care of the tape. Granted, Cry Baby Lane may not be a lost masterpiece like Greed, London After Midnight and The Magnificent Ambersons but it still deserves to be seen goddammit!

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

I have a feeling she might just be trying to build the whole thing up so it catches even more money if she sells it.

I have a feeling it was her idea from the beginning to get some money for it. Otherwise, why would she EVER say she had it and upload a clip before actually uploading the damn thing.

reply

Well, she says she uploaded those clips so people would stop calling her a liar and a troll. At the time that explanation made sense...but you could be right about it being her way of building suspense for the final release.

One thing is certain though...she DOES have the tape. That footage she posted hasn't been seen before (and believe me, I've looked) on the internet. So, at least we know that a tape IS out there.

The funny thing is, if she just uploaded it there'd be nothing that Nickelodeon could do. But if she sold it online then she could actually get sued or fined for profiting from someone else's copyrighted work

Two copies (air-copy & air-backup, 3-parts each) are in the "Nick Library" as IDs 963216 through 963222. Apparently, employees can check out titles from this library. So, if this gets anymore attention a few may begin to check it out, one of those copies could find itself on the internet. Also, isn't it possible the production crew (especially the director) would have broadcast-ready copies, perhaps even extended/different versions?

reply

Yes it is possible that the director has a copy but you got to remember this may has been just a silly kids film so maybe not. I know I would want to keep a copy of everything I work on if I were a film director.

reply

Lauer might not have it. Like you said, it was a goofy kids film he did over ten years ago. If he even remembers it, he probably doesn't care about it one way or the other.

It's possible that he may be under contract to not distribute or talk about the film without Nick's consent.

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

I believe the director is dead, although I may be wrong....

reply

Actually, wasn't there a guy who works at Nick on the reddit page? I thought he said Cry Baby Lane was restricted to VPs only and that low level people couldn't see it? Am I wrong?

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

That sounds untrue most likely the entire library is restricted from to most people who work at nick. Due to leaks that could be used to make fake DVDs of current shows or older ones that are not on DVD at all.

reply

If you're willing to do a little digging on the reddit article, I'm positive that that's what the guy said. He could always be a liar but I do remember him saying that Cry Baby Lane was specifically restricted from employees. They even have a database on their company website where they can look up every program ever aired on Nick. When he searched for Cry Baby Lane a message popped up with big red letters saying ACCESS DENIED or some words to that effect.

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

Well, now I'm very pissed off. If this chick seriously needs a reality check. Just give the freakin' tape to guy with the expensive A/V equipment and let him preserve it and then upload it. She'll still go down as the legend who revived a lost film. Now the stupid bitch just wants some money. Man, what a bad *beep* turn of events. This sucks.

reply

She's going to try to release it this weekend free of charge. Hold your horses, bud!

http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/jedpc/til_nickelodeon_r eleased_a_tv_movie_in_2000_that/c2bxs7c?context=3

reply

Hearing that makes me feel much better, maybe she realizes how much flack she's going to get if she tries to sell it or something.

Can't wait to burn it onto a DVD and watch it (hopefully) during the weekend!

reply

I've personally talked with her and gotten everything sorted out. She was having second thoughts about releasing the movie for free, because some private collectors were offering her over $500 for the tape. Apparently, these people were only interested in owning a rare, one of a kind item and had no intention of uploading the movie. She seemed pretty set on selling, so I told her she should sell it to them, but make many copies first and upload them online immediately after. But, to my surprise she had a change of heart and is going to upload it online free of charge. She said it should be up by Monday at the latest. And while she wants to be the one who uploads it first, she IS planning on sending the tape to one of the reddit people with the fancy restoration equipment so that a high quality version can be made. This version will also be uploaded to the web, but sometime later. Neither I nor her know how long the restoration/clean-up process will take, so God knows when that'll be ready, but we'll have her release to tide us over until then.

She was initially worried about a lawsuit from Nick, but I convinced her that everything would be fine. I told her that dozens of people upload movies online everyday and nobody is ever caught. Besides that, because Nick has no intentions of selling or playing this again, they can't argue that they're losing profit because of her actions. She accepted that, and now it seems like she isn't afraid anymore.

So, it looks like there's still hope. Just gotta keep our eyes open this weekend and hope she keeps her word.

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

Thanks, that's good to hear. Looking forward to seeing it.

Shame on those people who would hoard it just because it's rare. I would have taken the 500 dollars anyway, then upload it and give them the finger.

reply

Yes, reddit user pedoduck who works at Nick said he couldn't access it. "I just tried to request it, huge red letters popped up: RESTRICTED: PROTECTION."

However, reddit user Stabone130 claimed he also works at Nick and could access it. "you were probably trying to pull the AC in Alias. You can request the Edit Master on D2"

reply

OMG, Do you people really believe that all workers for Nick have access to the entire catalogue of shows and films, that would be restricted to only a few amount of people. If this wasn't the case this and all the other unreleased shows would have been leaked ages ago. These people are making it up to get karma from reddit.

reply

Probably true, it's not hard to write "I work for nick" and other *beep* to get some points.

I don't even necessarily intend to watch this movie (though, I probably will now that it's gotten so much hype), but seriously, *beep* nickelodeon for trying to deny something that had already aired. It must really suck for big corporations when information is so free, huh?

reply

I'm gonna be honest, i watched Nick all my life (Since 1991) and i don't remember that movie around the time it came out or seeing a damn commerical for it... Okay, don't remember much of 2000, i was 9, go figure. But hearing about this now about how it was thought as a lost movie and how it was just found on some dude's VHS tape in his attic (Or basement), well color me curious, i wanna see me some banned from TV goodness! So i'm watching it, thank you guy who found it!

No offense man, but that's really not necessary. The movie's already exploded onto every file sharing and torrent site on the internet. There's at least 2 different streams of it on youtube. We don't need to spread around any more links. This isn't pre-August 2011 when the film was unknown. Now a simple google search will bring up dozens of sites where the movie can be downloaded or seen for free.

I do appreciate your enthusiasm though.

PROUD Defender of the Seinfeld Board

reply

Actually Gatsby, I'm glad they posted the last youtube link, because it is the only one on this thread that still works.

I know there are torrents out there, but I refuse to file share or torrent because of the viruses. I know most are clean but I'd rather not run the risk. If it's not on Megavideo or Youtube, I just accept I cannot watch it.

reply

They are playing this movie on TeenNick on Halloween night as part of the 90s are all that.

reply

My point is we don't need a new thread/flood of posts on old threads that just spam the new youtube link. Just go to youtube and type it in yourself. With all the torrents already going around it's not like if it gets deleted it's gone forever. If it ever gets pulled again, someone else will simply upload a new copy in its place. Simple as that.

And in another 2 days when it gets played on TV again I'm sure we'll see a wave of people Tivo-ing and DVR-ing it, making higher quality version ad spreading those around, which will in turn stimulate a second wave of youtube videos and so on.

At this point, posting the youtube links to this film is like posting a new youtube link on the godfather board each time. The films so common it's like what's the point?
