good movie, but that accent...

those acute "i" stressed and those pronouncing mispellings ("table" as "tible", "fly" as "floy") were sooo annoying.

when english-speaking nations will all start talking like the cultural leading english-speanking nation, such as america? :)

reply

I can't really tell what Austrians are saying...

reply

Are you really serious? You idiots. How can you say Americans speak better English than Australians? You dont even spell your words correctly. You spell colour "color". The English are the only people you can rightfully say speak the language properly. And seeing as Australians sound more like English people than Americans do id shut up if i were you.

And as for you mate, "Austrians"? What are you on. Bloody idiots.

Sorry but you two have got to admit your not the sharpest knives in the draw.

reply

I'm not even american actually (so sorry for any mispellings and grammar mistakes), but the truth is that people who didn't born and who never lived in anglophonic countries more often than not learn english with the american accent .

so I say: get rid of those silly accent of yours and let's all uniform to just one form of english. since the most commonly heard and used is the american, let's all standardize our accents to the american.
don't take it personally jamie ;).

reply

No i didnt mean to sound so angry. It wasnt really you i was getting at, but both of your posts together sounded a bit stupid. I know most people learn English with an American accent and i dont hate the accent, but its not real English as they dont just speak with an accent but also spell differently. There is no way you could change anyones accent, theres people in the north of England that i cant understand, they speak with a horrible accent. To be honest a European accent on a girl is very sexy so id be happy if all girls spoke like that!

By the way im English and dont have an accent as you would say, its not posh but i pronounce my words correctly. But to Americans id have an accent and would sound posh, infact ive been told i sound like a james bond which is very sad as my accent is not at all posh. One persons view of an accent is totaly different to anothers.

reply

Australian is difficult to understand, thats all im saying, there's no need to over-react about it...why are you so quick to defend them if your english, it was them who spawned hitler.. are you a nazi!? you should be with me against them!

reply

and you, Jamie, did you understand evrything easily watching the movie, or even you found something a little difficult even if british and australian are more closely related than american and australian are?

reply

I honestly didnt find one bit hard to understand. I can however understand how hard it could be for an american to understand. Where i live the accent isnt that much different from the aussie one, also the sland used is the same slang we use in england (mate, adding an o onto peoples names eg Robbo, shiv, sweet as a nut, beaut,).

stmac are you serious? Were talking about australians not austrians. Havent you noticed how many times weve said it? There on the other sid eof the world to each other. Arnies austrian, eric banas australian. Have you even seen chopper?

reply

"Australian is difficult to understand, thats all im saying"

How is it difficult to understand? What i say is difficult to understand are americans! When you watch TV over here, you have to rewind it a million times to understand what you're saying, at least put the subtitles on, its really bad.

stmac are you mentaly retarded, are you so stupid that you dont know the difference between Austria and Australia? Did you not notice any of my comments? Please tell me your joking. You stupid little boy.

reply

No Jamie, I'm not mentally retarded and I am not a 'stupid little boy'...

Have you even been to australia before...I have.

I was on a school trip about world war 2 and we passed through on a coach.

We did stop at a service station though,

couldnt understand a thing they said there either,

I just kept saying g'day mate...I think that's how they say hello

reply

You went THROUGH AUSTRALIA ON A BUS!!

You do realise Australia is an Island?

One thing that annoys me more than anything is ignorance. The english language is shared by a large percentage of countries worldwide, and once a race is seperated from another, the accent begins to change. They start to adopt a different way of speaking ie America, Australia and New Zealand just list a few. The Australian and New Zealand accent only sounds really close to the english accent because we've only been seperated from them for about 200 years. America on the other hand has been seperate for hundreds of years hence a bigger difference in accent, and even large distances within a country can show a accent changing ie southern USA compared to the north. So when you say america is the "accent of choice" is just ignorant and i feel sorry for anyone else that thinks the same way you do.

Americans need to learn more about world history and the world in general rather than just the united states.

reply

Exactly Pete,

some people just don't know whats going on in this world.

When the whole Josef Fritzl thing happened, some Australians were saying that it was nothing to do with their society...but I think something like that would never happen in any european countries, so it must be to do with their environment. People need to open their bloody eyes!!

reply

Are you a total imbecile? Joseph Fritzl happened in AUSTRIA, not AUSTRALIA! Austria IS in Europe!!!!

Excelent answer to the stupid original poster.

Btw, I love the australian and british accents, I think they´re very charming.

reply

James Bond has many different accents, depending on which actor your talkin about. The fact that you say you dont have a posh accent so many times, leads me to believe that you do infact have a posh accent.

reply

Give me a yell when Italians all speak the same language.

I have Calabrian neighbours and their dialect sounds nothing at all like Italian.

reply

I can understand most accents, including Australian perfectly, and I'm from the UK. Granted, the US accent can be a little tricky, though it is little wonder when their Presidential role model elects to use an orifice other than his mouth to speak from.. :)

************************************************************
In America both spellings of color are acceptable.
And it's drawer, not draw. Talk about bad spelling.

From an American that apparently understands the English language better than you.

You're welcome for your grammar and spelling lesson. Learn to type, punctuate and spell properly while criticizing people, jackwagon.

reply

You know you have lost the argument when you criticise someone's grammar.

reply

That's OK we most probably can't understand you either

reply

How do you think we get on with some American accents, especially Southerners and people from Brooklyn?

reply

Alot of people around the world equally dislike the American accent, but that matter is trivial.
This movie was based on a real person, who really does speak like that. Down to a tea.
Depending on where you live in Australia, the accent differs.

reply

yeah if they live near the german border of australia, im sure they'll have a german twang to the accent

reply

lol..."german border of australia"

Now that's funny.

"You, you lay out my formal shorts."

reply

LOL stmac.

reply

stmac10 has made this the BEST IMDB THREAD EVAH!

reply

Look up some of Choppers standup on YouTube and I dont mean the Ronnie Johns take off.

Chopper Read speaks EXACTLY like that, down to a tea as one poster's already said.
Considering that this movie is based on his life it would be accurate to imitate the accent. (Unlike the Germans and the Russians portrayed in enemy at the Gate...wtf?)

I think 100% of the Australian Movie going public would have been outraged if Chopper's character had been performed by an American. Eric Bana did the role perfectly.

reply

if his accent was a little bit more germanic, it would have been closer to reality...i just couldnt see past the blatantly made-up 'never heard before' accent

reply

I seriously hope you were joking from the start, thats if your not joking now. Nah noones that retarded.

reply

I think Stmac is taking the P**s no one could be that thick. I mean getting austria mixed up with australia, what a turd! And Erics accent was EXACT thats how Chopper sounds you idiot. btw jamie i am from the north what is it about our accents you hate?

reply

Well it depends on where your from. Some accents on girls is very sexy like jennifer aliston(i think thats her name) for example. I dont particuly like the jordie accent and the glasgow accents pretty bad but there are nice ones like the softer of the brummy accents.

As for stmac i think at first he was serious and just realised what he was saying and turned it into a joke either that or he is a complete cock.

reply

fair enough, although I am a geordie ;) but i would agree with you that our accent is harsh, and comes across as stupid sometimes I am one of the lucky few who escaped the north east and now I have just a mild northern accent, of which i am proud. Is'nt Jennifer ellsion from liverpool? That for me is one of the most annoying accents, as is the brummie accent. But i would rather hear a local dialect rather than that awful clipped british accent we always seem to have in movies.
I reckon you're right stmac was embarrassed at his ignorance. bless the idiot.

reply

Wow. You dislike the Geordie accent yet you like the Scouse & Brummie ones?! That's astonishing. Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting.

reply

An Australian movie with Australian actors playing Australians and some people here think they shouldn't use Australian accents...

I sometimes wonder why I bother coming to these boards as I am constantly amazed at the stupidity of some people here.

yeah, u're right, but I pretty much started it as kinda of a joke. while watching the movie, the accent was one of the thing that got me the mots. you know, first time listening to the aussie's accent... What would be your first comment? WTF?

reply

I love the aussie accent (I'm a Londoner BTW)
To me it's very genuine and warm, and then when they use one of their sayings too, it can be very funny.
I spent time there (lived & worked with aussies) and after about a year my own speech started doing that rising thing that they do at the end of each line.

I personally find it to be built on a cockney-esque type accent.
Much nicer to me than the american accent which I dont mind most of the time, but isn't as good as the aussie.

Anyway good film.

reply

[deleted]

What do you mean!?

obviously if the film is going to be marketed within and screened in english-speaking countries then they should either have subtitles or have them speaking english,

im not racist or anything, i just can't speak australian

reply

Brummies and Welsh are the worst. Australian is good.

reply

Hahaha my best pals Grandad was Welsh and when he'd get drunk (I don't actually think he ever stopped drinking enough to be sober) He'd start talking in the thickest Welsh accent the world has ever seen. It was hilarious. I'd just laugh and nod and pretend I knew what he was saying... Welsh accents are the bomb.

- Timothy Dalton should get an Oscar and beat Sean Connery over the head with it!

reply

Truehammer...Austrian is a horrible accent

i quite like the welsh accent actually

...you are wrong

reply

The Australian dialect has evolved over time and there is no way in everlasting hell that it's going to change to an american type overnight... or ever, so give up the dream. There are many different American accents soooo which regional US accent would you have the entire English speaking world adopt? Hmmm.

F.ck that... My accent is unique. I'm not changing it because some people can't understand it.

- Timothy Dalton should get an Oscar and beat Sean Connery over the head with it!

reply

Yes i suppose I agree, but if the movie is to be shown in the UK I think there should either be subtitles or they should be speaking in english.

The austrian dialect has evolved in accordance with polish and german immigration over the last century but i still feel you should cater to your audience

reply

This turned into an essay... tl;dr: Film makers don't have to cater to the ignorance of certain members of their audience.

If you are talking about foreign films then yes I believe that there should be subtitles or dubbing. I think it's ridiculous to say for example that a movie made in France should be done in English instead of French. That would be silly.

If you're talking about the Ausralian accent, dialect? It is English. If you can't understand a colloquialism then look it up. Chopper wouldn't be what it is if it was changed to suit the region that it was playing in.

All places have regional differences. There are differences in slang terms and accents from one section of London to the other, from one section of New York to the other. They don't go changing the Sopranos because Tony Soprano speaks in a Jersey accent and someone in the Mid West might not understand what it means when Tony talks about his "Goomah".

Chopper represents a cross section of a particular part of Australia. It would take away from what the film is trying to portray if we changed everything to make it fit in with a UK audience. Then you might as well have just made a film about an English "gangster"... Oh wait, they already did that with "Snatch"... I would hate it if that movie were changed to "cater" to an Australian audience.

Hilarious stmac10. And to all the idiots who can't see a joke when they are beaten over the head with it, repeatedly, you need to get a sense of humour.

reply

stmac10...give it up...the joke has gotten old

reply

The accents were as I expected, but I wish my VHS had come with subtitles because I could make out only every fourth word.

reply

pretty funny thread this... but sad that Bana's absolute genius risks getting overlooked. He absolutely nailed the part - his accent and characteristics were spot on. The DVD extras show interviews with the man himself - and Bana got it to a tee. Genial performance.

I personally love the Australian accent, it can make some of the most boring things sound hilarious all by itself.
Though I hope this thread and all the angry responses in it are a joke. For starters, are you aware of how many accents are in America alone? Some of them are flat out ridiculous and so far away from some of the others that it's hard to think how someone so close can have such a different accent.
Big question to finish off, why would people start speaking English like people in America and not, y'know, England? (And England has a broad range of accents too.)
