Who sings the title track for the movie?

I've listened to every rendition of (The) Dark End of the Street on iTunes and none of them are the female singer from the film. I searched the discography of all the artists listed in the credits and strangely enough Cat Power has recorded a version of the song but it sounds nothing like the one in the film.

When I bought the DVD I thought that the individual songs would be credited, but they are not. I tried identifying the singer by both Midomi and Shazam but neither can identify her. I sent an e-mail to Farallon Films but it seems that information has been lost over time.

My last hope is that someone in the IMDb world may know...
