Why no extras?

Kind of sad really. Picked up both Jack & Brisco today. Brisco has a nice bit of extra's but Jack doesnt seem to have any, unless hidden. Seems like they could of included something, if nothing else a commentary from Bruce or a blooper reel at least. Still glad to have both shows in their entirety.

I was wondering this, too!

The first thing I did this morning was run out and buy both series, also!

That's it exactly. They spent a ton of time and $$ on the Brisco dvd - like digging up exec. producer Carlton Cuse who's more than just a little busy w/ bigger fish these days, like, oh his show "Lost!"

I suspect they decided to release "Jack" as an afterthought to sort of piggyback onto the buzz from "Brisco."

We need to remember, "Jack" was not even received that favorably by critics, and it never even got the cult audience that Brisco did.

Hey if you know of any cult following, I'd sure love to know where to find them. To my knowledge I have the only Jack website that has been updated in about three years. I also moderate what is to my knowledge the only Jack of All Trades discussion forum in existence, and really no one goes there any more except friends of mine, none of whom really talk about the show any more. There's a whopping one Jack roleplay game, which has only two active players. There's also two Jack mailing lists, and I really think I'm the only person to have posted any significant news to any of them in the last three years. The show has never been rerun in the US, and was never a hit in any countries overseas. And it was never released on video, so people weren't able to rent the old episodes up until now. One friend of mine has a "Jack fan listing" at her site ... and a couple of dozen people worldwide have signed up over the last couple of years, but good luck getting any of them to ever participate in any Jack activities.

So I must ask - where is this cult you speak of, and how can I get in touch with them? :)

But I agree - Universal could have given us some extras. They appear to have decided it wasn't worth their time though. :(

OK, I give - how would one a gauge cult folowing then?

Away from the net there are definitely no Jack conventions. There aren't any comic books of novelizations, or models (Trek for example thrived on those for years after the original series ended.)

There's no Jack merchandise being made... there are no costumes available for parties or Hallowe'en...

None of the creative people involved w/ the show have written any books or even articles about it.

There aren't even any bootleg showings of illegaly taped episodes on college campuses (or if there are, they are completely by word-of-mouth, because I get alerts to any college paper listing of "Bruce Campbell" - and you have no idea how many articles on some midwestern basketball coach with the same name that forces me to sift through!)

So apart from perhaps fond memories in the kinds of the several million people who sporadically watched the show..... *IS* there any cult following I'm missing out on?

BTW, that message board is at www.sf-fandom.com/vb/fantasy_tv/jack_of_all_trades . :)

I NEVER thought we'd ever see Jack Of All Trades on dvd! Extras or not, I'm just happy this classic is available!

why is there a pissing contest on whether there is a cult following to this show? Kinda pointless, but hey just my 2c.

reply

No pissing contest at all.

I genuinely am interested if there is some cult following, because if so, I really would like to join whatever cult activities there may be.

I imagine the distinction here is simply in the term "cult." My guess is that the original poster simply means that there was a loyal following of the show when it was on the air. As opposed to, say, no one watching it. Several million watched it regularly - it just needed several million more.

I think "cult" is generally applied to some sort of activity other than simply watching something. So that even if something is not commercially successful, it may have a faithful cult following after the fact. Since "Jack" has never been rerun, and until now it wasn't available for purchase or rental, even watchign the reruns has been impossible, unless you happened to taope them on your own 6 years ago.

Who knows - maybe the dvd set will inspire some cult activity!

reply

Huh - wonder why that guy's posts were deleted? There wasn't anything unruly in them, as I recall .....

Audio commentary on, say, 10 episodes by writers, producers, creators and, of course, Bruce seems like it would have been a cheap and easy way to get some bonus features onto this set. Perhaps also a deleted scene gallery and if there is one, an EPK would have wrapped things up nicely.

"Even though I'm no more than a monster, don't I have the right to live?"

reply

Maybe Bruce can put out a bio DVD or something discussing all his shows, might be interesting to watch

reply

Or you could just watch the reading from the Book of Bruce in the Brisco collection. As for Jack of all Trades that would be nice to see him talk about even if its only for a minute.

Great show...as another poster said, I'm just glad its on DVD at ALL! I'll take the show "barebones" rather then not at all....and the picture looks GREAT...its not show off worthy, but looks better then I remember it.

Thanks Universal.

I'm not sure why either. Maybe Brisco is more well received so they put more effort into it's DVD release? Just a guess.
