Versus Brisco?

Just finished viewing Adventure of Brisco County JR for the second time in my life (was about 10 years old the first time), and I must say, Mr. Campbell was perfect in the role of the witty cowboy Brisco. So needless to say, when I discovered Jack of All Trades here on IMDB, I knew I had to check it out, since It looks like a similar show. Or so I think...

I'm looking for a comedy-type show that has Campbell in the lead role of some kind of witty person, like he was in Adventures of Brisco. Is this it? Or is this show something completely different?

Basically: Will I like this show if I liked Brisco County? What are the (major) differences between the shows?

Thank you.

what power would hell have, if those here imprisoned were not able to dream of heaven?

Similarities:
-Both are historical action-comedies starring Bruce Campbell in the title role.
-Both play fast and loose with history incorporating anachronistic characters and technology for comedic effect.
-Both feature a super intelligent animal who helps the hero on occasion—for Briscoe it is a horse, for Jack it is a parrot.
-Both show Bruce Campbell wearing a hat.

Differences:
-Briscoe is more serious; the comedy serves the action, à la Indiana Jones. In fact, one of the creators of the show, Jeffery Boam, wrote Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
-Jack is more silly; the action serves the comedy, à la Austin Powers. In fact, Mini-Me, Verne Troyer, guest starred on several episodes as Napoleon.
-The comedy on Jack is much broader and bawdier. Jack frequently cracks jokes about…well, various bodily functions. There is more sexual tension between Jack and his partner (female partner) than between Briscoe and his love interests.
-Briscoe is an idealist and is well educated. Jack is a rogue and pokes fun at his partner for her sophistication and intellectualism. Yet, Briscoe and Jack do share a skepticism of new technology.
-The villain on Briscoe is much more intelligent and more menacing than any of the villains Jack has to deal with. Jack’s main villain is the French governor whose name happens to be Croque (pronounced “croak”). That should give you some idea of the level of sophistication the show is going for.
-Briscoe is a western set in the early twentieth century, Jack is a swashbuckling adventure series set on Palau Palau in the early nineteenth century.
-Briscoe has better production values, because it was a network show filmed on the Warner Brothers lot. Jack was a syndicated show filmed in New Zealand and produced by the same people who made Hercules and Xena.
-Each episode of Briscoe was an hour long; each episode of Jack was a half hour.

The bottom line:
-If you’re a fan of Bruce Campbell, you will want to check out both shows, if you haven’t already. You can never have too much Bruce. I also highly recommend his new show, Burn Notice, on the USA Network here in the States.

-If you’re not a fan of Bruce Campbell but just happen to like Briscoe County Jr. because of its send-up of western conventions, you might like Jack of All Trades because it sends-up Scarlet Pimpernel/Pirate conventions (it just sends them much further up!).

-If you like Briscoe County Jr. for its action, wit, Lord Bowler, or gun play, then you should probably look elsewhere. Wild, Wild West is the closest show I can think of, but even that is a stretch.

Hope this answers your question.

Wow! Thanks for such a great answer, it definitely answered my question!

I have given the reason to why I liked Brisco County so much some thought, and I'm not sure it's because of Bruce Campbell being the main character. At least, not ONLY because of him. I enjoyed the witty and sarcastic, yet "wholesome" and family friendly humor of the show. I have no idea why though, but I guess I am tired of all the shows we have today. Another reason may be that I watched the show when I was a kid, and I was a big fan of it then. I think the show subconsciously brought back some good memories.

Of what you have written here, I'm guessing I wont like Jack of all Trades as much as Brisco County, but I will definitely give it a shot.

English is not my native language, so my grammar might be a bit "off".

A major difference is the type of humor. Brisco is clever and sophisticated, JOAT is all low humor: Fart and belch jokes, visual jokes, one liners and double entendre. Definitely not "wholesome," and an entirely different kind of wit. Given what you say you like about Brisco, I think you'll find JOAT disappointing.

I disagree with ssanders above...I love Brisco & am a little mroe then halfway through the Complete Series of Jack and its ALL good. A little more slapstick, but its BRUCE being BRUCE...what's NOT to love??!?!?

I asked Bruce Campbell last night at a Q&A after a showing of My Name Is Bruce at Kendall Cinema in Massachusetts, "Who would win in a fight, Brisco Country Jr. or Jack Styles?"

Bruce immediately responded, "Jack Styles."
