Filming with no sound

I realise that it was typical for Italian productions to be be filmed with no sound, with voices dubbed in later...in the 1970's. I would like to know why Dario Argento is still doing this in the 21st century. I am a huge fan of his work, but I cannot get around the fact that post dubbing is really helping to destroy this man's work. I saw "Sleepless" in Italian, because I heard that the English dub was so horrible. Well be assured that the Italian dub is wretched as well. No matter how well-made a film is, poor dubbing ruins it. Is filming without audio just lazy film making?
