Where?

One more question: where exactly does the film take place?
Merci!

reply

Le tournage (à Gaillon, en Haute-Normandie) s'est déroulé sur six semaines (de février à mars 1999).

from allociné

so the shooting took place in Gaillon in the Haute- normandie in a 6 weeks period from february to march 1999

wich is a bit funny cause I never heard of a thing as Haute-Normandie , in fact it's in the Eure department

Mr. Piano, May I call you Renzo? Nice name. Thank you for both replies.
I like your Broad Contemporary Art Museum at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (BCAM at LACMA).
Now I make most of my film comments at netflix.com using the name JC 595854. Netflix does not have message boards but I think you can comment on my comments here at imdb.
I see you have a lot of Keira Knightley posts (which I have not read). Did you see her in the 2-part low-budget version of Doctor Zhivago made for British TV? I recommend that.

reply

I have actually seen "Zhivago" made for itv I think it was

and it was quite , hmm , allright.
Keira was great in it but it's not exactly David Lean's classic.

I know I'm not flash as Gehry but I'd like to think I'm quite a decent architect :-)
Since you like to enjoy french movies I recommend the Last Cannes Palme d'OR made by the same guy

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1068646/

It's hardly a perfect representation of the crumbling school system and the acting is dodgy but it's worth a look .

see ya around

reply

I have mixed feelings about Gehry's flash.
You're not a Sarko fan but he's better than what we've had for the last 8 years.
The idea of remaking Doctor Zhivago was odd but I thought the result was interesting. Keira's Lara was more of a feminist.
Definitely I'll see Cantet's Cannes prize winner when it's available here.
I'll post a message if I have any questions about it.
Merci!

reply

Is he really ?

better than your last 8 years of Dubya ?

That genius can't be the benchmark to judge politicians or else we're all fooked !

I'm not saying I don't like Gehry's work , the guy has clearly something going on , and eventough I only know 3 of his works personnally (as in : I've actually seen it !)

namely Bilbao (who will go down in history , simply breathtaking ) ,
la Cinémathèque Francaise and his Prague dancing house

I also have mixed feelings. He kinda get trough as a rockstar architect more interested in placing his creations that actually relating to the projects he's getting.

see ya.

Yes, W is an awful benchmark for comparisons, that's true. With 3 more months of W, we might all be fooked.
I'm not sure how well Gehry's work will age, but it has been visionary.
Here is a link for a (negative) NY Times review of Renzo's LA art museum:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/15/arts/design/15cont.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all&oref=slogin

If the link doesn't work, you can probably find it by doing a search.
I think the review is negative because culturally NY and LA are somewhat competitive. In other words, I think it's at least partly sour grapes.

I think it's Bill Maher who said for months that Dumbya had one major screw up left in him and I guess we're deep in it.

Having the former CEO of Goldman Sachs at the helm to moralize the markets is a "heckuva job Brownie" type of situation.

Since you seem like someone interested in architecture , I want to point you in the direction of an fantastic series of documentaries about architects made by the confidential (as in : nobody watches it ) Franco/ german channel "Arte" called : architectures (stan Neuman /Ricahrd Copans)

here's a sample (in french) :http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/stan%2Bneuman

If you were to google it with ac3 attached to it , you might find torrents about some of most amazing buildings in the world with english soundtrack

FLW , Aalto, Bauhaus , Nouvel , Gehry and a few more

Go nuts !

My first degree was in art history. I am interested in architecture, but I consider functionality to be an important concept. For example, I'm not sure it's good for an art museum to look like a sculpture. I saw Liebekind's Denver Art Museum which is supposed to look like mountain peaks.
Thanks for these references. I will look into them.

That series I recommended has Liebeskind Jewish Museum Berlin in it

and the way the serie works (very didactic for good or for bad) is in that case very useful to "understand" the building and what Liebeskind tried to do.

I agree with the sculpture argument but in the case of Bilbao it was a great part of its success (everyone agrees the collections of art in it , is not that impressive anyway)

The Bilbao effect (ie a lagging city trying to make a splash with some eye catching piece of architecture to get a boost )

is ,if not real ,at least what a lot of midsize forgotten cities are aiming for.

It worked once.

Yes, as you probably know, many American cities (including Miami) commission a new building (or wing) for an art museum that has a mediocre art collection.
BCAM is an exception: the collection of contemporary art is wonderful (although the NY Times published a negative 'sour grapes' review).
I would like to see Bilbao, but not for the collection.
