Plot hole

If Tomas was so lucky, why wasn't there a taxi waiting for him at the end?

reply

I think it has something to do with the fact that, just because Tomas is lucky, it doesn't mean that everything he wants and needs just turns up out of the blue for him.

He'll probably survive, against all odds, and escape from that deserty place with no food/water etc. That would be lucky!

It's not so much that Tomas is lucky but that he is doing it for love and love is what gave him the strangth. At the end of the movie when he is about to do the final game of chance at the casino with samuel sam says that no one has ever come here for love and that's why he won because love was greater then luck.

It's not much of a plot hole. The polaroid of his girlfriend, Anna, was his secret strength. That's why he lost in the forest. He didn't have his possession.
And on a sillier note, he burned that picture at the end, so there went his taxi.

Tomas did not have Ana's picture in his possession when he played Russian roulette ("The Game") with Samuel, either. Indeed, Samuel had it. If Ana's picture was his secret strength, then Samuel would have possessed this strength in The Game. I agree with the observation that luck does not mean everything comes easily to Tomas (or others). Rather, it means that in crucial situations, things go in Tomas' favor.

Likely, there were a few cops hanging around the casino (remember her walkie-talkie)... which is why he took off across the desert. I would rather know what would happen in case of a 'draw', do they keep playing russian roulette? It might have been more interesting to finish the 'round' :), see the surprised faces, tension, and go one more, again to Tomas, again back to 'the Jew', and then... have her bust in on the game. One might wonder who's luck the second shot was... his or hers ...I think it both, though hers ran out, she was lucky enough to get all three of the other shooters... including Mr. Luck.

I can't believe everyone replied so seriously to that, I thought it was just a joke...? Made me smile anyway.

reply

I guess you were just lucky!

because it is not directed by steven spielberg.

Look what happened to everyone else:
- The Jew gets shot and dies
- The Woman cop gets shot and dies
- Matador guy dies
- Frederico inherits the casino but the Jew took away his luck at the beginning of the movie, so it's only a matter of time before someone comes and shoots him. If you think about it, he's the unluckiest since he KNOWS he doesn't have anymore luck and he knows how he's going to die
- Tomas...well he is lucky enough to live at the end...BUT...(1) he is wanted by the police for bank robbery; (2) he no longer has a girfriend (she hates him); (3) his getaway plane crashes (even though he survives it was still his damn getaway plane; (4) he doesn't have any of the bank moneyhe stole; and (5) he doesn't have the insurance money... he's just a wanted criminal in a bloody white suit on the run.

Anna is lucky because even though she was accidentally shot, she's the only one who has a chance to live happily every after. He luck was because Tomas told her he didn't love her...he no longer wanted her around to share the loot and cramp his style. And it's not because he said it because he knew the plane was going to crash as other have argued...uh, if you know a plane was going to crash why would you only warn your girlfriend and still get on yourself?

So instead of being the girlfriend of a wanted criminal, she will prob marry the guy who accidentally shot her (I'm assuming that guy was not her brother) and who will feel forever guilty and would do anything to make amends for it.

No one is lucky forever - there WAS a taxi waiting for him, but another, even luckier guy came along and took it just before he showed up...

:P

(I'm just a bear of very little brain - what's your excuse?)
