Flickering lights

Does anyone have a theory on the meaning of the flickering lights? It was a motif that was carried throughout the entire film. I thought maybe it was a sign of death.

It seems to me the lights flicker whenever someone's luck is about to change.

I saw it as a visual roulette effect...

Samuel Berg is shown pressing a button when he wants his opponent to be brought in. That's when the lights flicker.

What I did not understand was why he wore a black head-cover (except the last time).
