I love this movie!

I haven't seen a movie that made me FEEL something in a long time. I happened to catch this just by accident, just because I saw that Henry Thomas was in it. It's strange, hard to watch at times, sad, and above all, beautiful. I was blown away by the acting by all, even Swain, who I previously thought was a bad actress. As strange as he was, I'm now infatuated with Arie Verveen. Anyone have any comments on anything else he's been in?
Aside from the fact that the whole time I was hoping one of them would take a shower, I liked everything about this movie. I love the end scene. This is my current favorite movie, I think I've watched it about 15 times in the last few months.

I agree with you. The griminess was maybe a little excessive, but I've been there, too. It's certainly a powerful movie, more so than most. I don't understand the low ratings either, I was going to give it a 9 (I never give anything a 10) but when I noticed the low scores, I did give it a 10.

I have only seen one other hillbilly, poor-white-trash style movie that I liked, but can't remember the name of it, it was about a baby (and I only saw that one once), but this one is even better. I think I've seen it 3 times now.

I think this was a good movie (I don't know about giving it a 10 tho). Whoever reviews movies gave it one and a half stars which I think was too low. Swan was great as (excuse my saying) guttter trash. And the three of them needs to take a shower. When she made love outside after her husband was killed, I kept on thinking if that was me i'd say "Honey could you please take a shower before we do this" (and if I looked as dirty as him, I would want to take a shower too).

reply

Well, I think she is sexy, dirty or not. In vietnam we used to take showers in the rain during monsoon season.

Thanks for the tip. :-)

I thought this movie would be easy to dismiss, despite the fact that the luminous Karen Allen (who is a screen goddess to me) was in it. It really affected me, though, and like the poster above, it got me interested in the actor who played Flowers. It was also cool to see James Urbaniak, who I remembered as playing R. Crumb in "American Splendor."

I have previously seen Swain in a B-movie entitled "Tart" and wasn't too impressed by her, but she went all-out in the role of the siren Inez McBeth.

I stopped flipping thru the movie channels when I saw Henry Thomas's name too.
I missed the first 30 minutes of the movie so I definately need to watch it again.
I loved every second of the movie. I fell in love with Flowers and wanted Inez too fall in love with him too. I didn't care that he was dirty.
I would give this movie and ten. Its one I will watch again.

I just caught (only) the last 15 minutes on Stars, and it blew me away.

Came here and was similarly stunned by the low rating. Glad to see all of your posts here, and looking forward to seeing the whole thing.

I totally agree. I actually came here to see what else Arie Verveen has been in. Turns out, I've seen him before, but nothing captivated me like his performance in this.

Wow. Absolutely stellar.

I actually saw the movie on Lifetime lol I know and I figured it would be another cheesy husband beats wife and she overcomes him story. It wasn't at all it was much darker and grittier I guess than I thought. I liked it I thought henry thomas and especially Arie Verveen were really good. I also wanted her to love him in the end. I really dont think it deserves a rating of 3 come on crappy movies like big momma's house etc deserve that rating.

This is a B movie that, while more interesting than the usual Lifetime fare, feels like it was made by people who've read a lot of William Faulkner stories and wanted to make one of their own. If you haven't read him and you like this kind of story, check out his novels, or maybe one of the movies based on them (like OLD MAN with Jeanne Tripplehorn) and you'll encounter something that's much higher quality.

i love Arie and I love dirt! I want a big ass black eye and a true lover with full facial hair... this is one of the greatest movies ever made (although i am completeley repulsed by the blonde freak in the silk pajamas)
