Continuation of Unit One

I am filled with dismay that my favourite programme "Unit One" may be discontinued, it is one of the most interesting programmes on TV and the members of the Unit complement each other and interact so well - please continue this wonderful programme. The scenic background is fascinating while the content of the programme has enough personal information to add to the interest.

Are you in Australia? Where did you hear that the show might be finishing?

By the way, does anyone in Australia know which series of the show we're seeing now?

Thanks!

hey were in the last season :( sad, i know. do any of you have any screen caps pictures from the episode?

reply

This site has a few screen caps as well as cast photos http://www.dr.dk/TV-Drama/serier/Rejseholdet/index.asp
I wish I could read Danish!

The last episode (#32) is being shown on SBS on Friday night (April 28th). I was really hoping they'd start broadcasting from the beginning straight away because it's such a popular show. :(

Might just have to wait for the DVD of series 1 to be released in August. It's a long wait for my Rejseholdet fix!

reply

Oh, that's depressing. It's the only TV show I really like.

Yes I agree, I rate it 9.5 out of ten. The DVD set will be well worth getting. There are a few episodes I missed, especially the first late episode a few weeks ago. It would be excellent to see more of UO or other Danish shows.

Another big fan of Unit One here :) I also missed that first late-night episode that was shown without any form of advertising - I was furious at that decision, and still am, as I'd never missed a show until then. I phoned SBS at the time & was told it was because the 2 eps in question were rated MA, but they couldn't tell me anything more than that, spouting the usual claptrap about passing my comments on to the appropriate department etc. Like that ever does any good! I followed that up by posting comments in their Hotline guestbook and also e-mailing both their Hotline (the website says to do so if you want a reply) and their Informal Complaints addresses. Fat lot of good that did, as I've yet to hear back from them, despite sending a follow up e-mail.

I've been hoping they would do the right thing and replay it asap, but now the series has finished, it doesn't look like they will, except as part of the inevitable repeats some time down the track. It makes me mad that it would take several months at the earliest for them to show the last few eps again, especially since I taped the last 3, intending to watch them only when I've seen the missed episode. I'll probably regret waiting that long, but that serial killer storyline looked like a great one, and I'm a stickler for continuity. Sure, I could have read a summary of it, but I'd much rather watch the real thing.

It's such a shame the show's ended in Denmark; it's hard to believe there were only 10 more episodes than a typical US show has in one season! Quality over quantity I suppose, which isn't a bad thing but definitely leaves you wanting more...

Well i can tell you that is very common in Demnark that there isnt made "a lot" of episodes of a tv-series. They usely stop when the shows is at its best. Its pretty much planned from start how many episode there is gonna be (if its a success). I think thats a big part why it keeps being interesting to watch. they know from start, most of the time, what is gonna happen with the characters (ex. romance, tragic things etc.) and when that arnt that many episodes, they dont dont risk repeating them selfs.

This was allso an extreme big hit in Denmark, when its was running. The Viewer rating showed that half of the danish population was watching it And only when the danish national soccer team plays a very importen match will so many people be watching. The writer of the show has also made some other series to, who allso was very big in Denmark.

Taxa (Pre Unit One/rejseholdet) about people and life around a Cab/taxa/taxi company.)

Ørnen/The Eagle (Post Unit One) kinda of an agent/police drama with more action than Unit One, but still with some of the same feel to it as Unit One. It won an EMMY for best Drama series, just like Unit One did.

Krønikken/Better Times. Story begins in 1949 and follows for 25 years 4 characters from upper- and workingclass. You follow a country and the characters
through a lot of changes. Many claims that this kinda of a follow up/"remake" of Matador "the biggest show of all time" in danish television . wich also follows to families one poor and one rich through a period of time. Krønikken was also Nominated for an EMMY, but didnt win, well we cant win 'em all :D

Another big Hit Serie in the last couple of years.
Nikolaj & Julie. About everyday life, centered around the main characters Nikolaj and Julie, a young couple who separates and divorces and all the problems and conflicts that come with that. Like Unit One you also follow some of the other characters' up and downs, this also won an EMMY. I think that its great that so many Danish shows gets praised abroad.

Thanks for all this information. It's great to have some tips about other things to watch by the same film-makers. I loved Unit One and was very disappointed when it ended, but I think you're right that the fact they made a limited number of episodes contributed to the quality. I'm going to check out the other shows you mention - although I expect I might have trouble getting hold of them in Australia. Thanks again!

I know I'm very late in this thread, maybe some still look at it. I'm in the U.S. and just became aware of this a couple of years ago. I really enjoy Danish/Scandinavian television and films. I feel you get more character development and it is more realistic than a lot of what we see here. My problem though is often difficult for me to get my hands on it.

I was thrilled several months ago when I found a dealer in the U.K. that was allowing pre-orders for Series 4 of Unit 1 that would be available this past July. My delight in receiving this turned to sadness knowing this would be the end. It's funny how invested you can become in characters so well developed that you actually want to know what is happening in their lives. :)

Well, I bit the bullet last night and watched the last two episodes. Crazy as it sounds I was really concerned about how fast the episodes were moving and on the final one there were a couple of times that they would show an aerial view and I would think Oh No! it's over!

This says a lot about the writers, directors and cast of such an interesting endeavor. How do they say in Danish? Tak(?) !!! Thanks!

I'm even later, in the UK. What a series – it's absolutely fantastic. I just thought the last couple of episodes were a bit unfinished. What happens to Jonnie, and to Fischer? Is the team ever completely reunited? I wish the series could be continued (and the Protectors, which I've started watching).

I'm finding it really difficult to watch any American series now. They just seem to be so full of plastic and unreal people by comparison to the great characters in the Nordic Noir genre generally. I love the variety of ages and types of men and women portrayed – and the fact that few of the people are 'perfect' looking, like the Hollywood 'waxworks' with their tight, blank faces.

Great show. I came to this following Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal. Loved this series. Felt as though the characters were "real" too, and wanted to know how they got on. A credit to all concerned.

reply

I think Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic in Unit One, but the other characters are just as good and well drawn in the series. For me Unit One is the best of the Nordic Noir genre, though I also like several other series a lot.

There's also something called 'Eagle' (or something like that) and Beck, neither of which are available in the UK, unfortunately, apart from a couple of short seasons of Beck. I hope they will become available on DVD in time.

I won't watch Hannibal myself (even though the great Richard Armitage will be in it now), because it is just too gory for me and doesn't appeal to me for that reason.

reply

They were my thoughts too, initially, but I watched it anyway. Not for the faint hearted, that is for sure. But I liked it. Mads Mikkelsen is terrific in it. Three generations of women in our house agree that He makes the show work. So with the addition of Richard Armitage as Francis Dollarhyde it was a certainty that we will be watching Series 3.

reply

Ten years later and people are still just discovering this series and loving it. And yes, I'm aware that I'm probably "talking" to myself by replying here, but as long as a series is viewable comments and questions are relevant and will continue to be posted.
