I was watching the episodes online and in Liberty & Larceny, the short blurb says that Liz is his mom. Did I miss that somewhere? I didn't get the impression that she was his mom, just that she was his mentor and she's only in that episode. I am tired though so maybe I missed a bit in there?

No, you didn't miss anything. Liz was Darien's mentor, not his mom. His mom passed away when he was a kid then Darien and his brother Kevin went to live with their aunt and uncle.
