Confused!

Just watched all the episodes back to back. In episode 8 where Bella visits her Mum, Bella storms out and a man walks over to her mother and says "Who was that?" and Bella's Mum replies, "Your daughter". Now unless her mother slept around and didn't take any account of her conquests, surely she would have a pretty good idea of who Bella's father is? If Senator Calhoun was Bella's father, then I'm sure Bella's mother would have said something to him and he wouldn't have reacted the way he did with Bella. The fact that he knew nothing about her was a tad curious. Plus, the fact that Bella's mother claims Bella's father is the guy that she's with at the time makes things even more curious.

I'm confused and clutching at straws here, I really wanted Bella and Scout to get together, they had such potential! It screams at me everytime I watch it! Gah!
