I knew taking a ride with Doug was a bad idea, but it's never really made clear what happened...she just gets out of his pickup looking sad then she starts crying. Did she get raped? Did she have sex willingly, but then regretted it? Was riding around til dawn with that loser just a depressing experience?

I think that she just rode around with him all night and probably fell asleep and then woke up at his place, feeling a bit lost and then regretting the whole experience due to her feelings for Tim and the vulnerable naivety of her actions. She probably had not felt truly loved by someone since her parents died, and I imagine she cried once she had stepped back and reflected on her entire current life situation.
Doug never gave the indication that he was a rapist or capable of that in any way. It looked more like Ellie went to his house and slept with him. The next morning she woke up hung over and was horrified at what she'd done. I think she probably did sleep with him, judging from her extreme reaction the next morning
