Someone had a thing for black and white making this movie. The checkerboard showed up in the apartment bathroom, the diner and then again on the tv set of Sally Jessy Raphael. Weird.

Could it be a symbol for the game of trying to find the killer? Maybe the set designer just likes checkers, lol

I think it's a Chicago motif of some kind. Do a google image search for "Chicago Police hat" and you'll see checkboards there. Some kind of municipal meme?
