Julie Andrews singing?

I didn't think she could still sing like she did in this movie. And I didn't know that Kathy Bates could sing so well. Great movie!!

She had nodules on her vocal folds ("vocal cords") that were surgically removed. These are not uncommon in professional singers. She was concerned that she wouldn't sing again, and it was devastating. How wonderful it was to hear her again! The upper limit of her rang in the film was a lot lower than what we're used to from this soprano, but this happens with age - nodules or not.

Yes, wasn't Kathy Bates's singing wonderful?! What a delighful film. And what a trip to see Alan Rickman play a gay singer! Who knew HE could sing? I loved this film.

I hope I havent grabbed the wrong end of a comment here but the gay singer Victor Fox was played by the great Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce who is one of my favourites and most certainly can sing.

didn't julie andrews win a massive lawsuit some years back against the surgeons who operated on her because she was supposed to never be able to sing again???

when is she going to give back the money she won?

Julie's songs were dubbed with her own voice for the movie. I was all excited to see her sing again when I first saw the film, but read that it was dubbed.
I sort of wondered if it was and I was correct.

I think the lawsuit was because her vocal chords were damaged-she would still be able to sing but there was a chance her voicewould never be as good. It still sounds fine to me tbough. Personally though as you may have gathered from my last post I was more exited to have Jonathan PRyce singing on screen. He is superb.

I think they got the "Getting to know you" that she sung from her "The King and I" record in which she sang that song..

But I've heard that she sang in Princess Diaries.

She did sing in The Princess Diaries 2, but her voice is very much lower, and it was a talking sing. She did win a huge settlement for the hack job the Dr. did on her vocal cords, and she has worked very hard to try to get her voice back.

Her husband reported that she would probably never sing again because the throat surgery had ruined her voice. [November 1998]
Underwent throat surgery. [March 1998]
Spent some time in a psychiatric clinic, to help her cope with the trauma resulting from her throat surgery.
7 September 2000 - Her malpractice suit against the 2 New York Mt. Sinai Hospital doctors who allegedly botched her throat surgery was settled for an undisclosed sum.
The London press reported that Miss Andrews's settlement for her botched throat surgery was nearly 21 million British pounds, or about 30 million U.S. dollars. [2001]

Kathy has a great set of pipes - see the TV remake of ANNIE for further proof. As for Julie Andrews, they used her recording of THE KING AND I for this movie. Julie did the KING recording about ten years before this movie was shot.
