Victor Fox = Barry Manilow

Anyone else catch this similarity?

reply

Yeah, at first I thought it was him.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it isn't so.

reply

yes, yes, yes. and what a great sense of humor barry m. had agreeing to cameo in the film. I love that he was in on the joke. and for the record, i really enjoyed the movie -- flaws and all.

I only saw it last night but I thought the same thing.

See, I saw him as a grand mixture of Barry Manilow and Liberace. His songs were very like Manilow (who even shows up at the end) but still his life, his dress and even his hair seems a bit like Liberace.

This show is about the greatist movie I have seen. I love, love, love it! It is mostly mindless entertainment, but it moves outside most hollywood's normal format for movies (in my eyes) and brings something quite surprising and new!

I caught it. This movie was very frustrating. Great cast (the GREAT Kathy Bates)and great set up, then it turned into some "let's-trap-the-serial-killer-in-the sewer" nonsense. It should have been better!

I feel pretty certain that Victor Fox was modeled after Engelbert Humperdinck, who probably ISN'T gay, but is European... and as cheesy as the day is long.

reply

He was all those pls Tom Jones - Green Green Grass of Home and Fox was Welsh, and his sister can't tell the difference between Fox and Jones.

reply

Yes, Victor can be compared to many male singers of endless and sometimes sappy love ballads, Barry Manilow being one of them. You have to give it to Barry though, he has the ability to be himself and laugh at himself - and like Jonathan Pryce, he's still sexy!

reply

I thought it was the closest to coming out publicly. any other singer would have refused a cameo in the movie for fear of being associated with the story but I think Mnailow might have actually used it as a means for association thus as a coming out or sort of confession to his fans, I mean, if itlooks like a dog and walks like a dog... no?

reply

Victor Fox was based far more on Liberace than anyone else.

They included:

- the much younger lover who's passed off as an employee
- the messed-up relationship with his mother
- the tendency to look for anonymous sex in "dirty" places despite having a partner
- the over-the-top glittery outfits
- the early death
- the battle over his estate

Exactly so, e827. 😃

Barry Manilow appeared in the film at the end not because Victor was in any way derivative of him as a performer but because several of the songs in Unconditional Love were his compositions.

I think Victor was a composite type character as much inspired by Tom Jones and Slim Whitman as any gay performers.

Jonathan Pryce has twice aced roles requiring him to be a ghostly or guardian angel type character.

Definitely among my fave Kathy Bates performances!

What a delightful, wacky comedy!
